65 gmc rear end

I have 1965 GMCshort bed,originally 6 cylinder,3 spd on the column.My question is if I drop a 350 crate motor in it I was told I need to change out my rear end,it has a ten bolt in it now and I want to keep the 3spd trans will the original trans and rear end work with the 350?

Aside from wanting to change gear ratios you shouldn't have to do anything to the rear end itself. It likely won't know or care what engine is up there unless it's putting out massive power that might challenge or break the rear.

Your rear end will be the Dana 44. As long as your 350 is stock to moderately built and you aren't running wide and or stickey tires, it will live quite a long time. As for the 3 speed, I don't have any experience with those. But just as with the rear end, it is how much power you are putting thru it and how you drive it.

your gona hate that 3 sp. good news is it take about 30 minutes to change em. if ya drive like an old man.well, not like this old man. and never try to get into 1st. gear till your stopped you'll be ok but non-syncro trannys are not much fun.

Thanks for all the replies,it answered my question.To answer some question that were asked, the original six cylinder is locked up and im getting a good deal on a 350 crate. I have plans on making this a driver on a budget but not truck that's jury rigged.A friend gave me 3spd trans that is synchronized so that's another reason im going with that.Im going to spend a lot of money on body and paint so other major fixes are going have to be updated later.

Sounds to me like you have a good plan going, the rear end and trans will be fine unless you plan on putting massive power to it. Good luck with your project.
