69/70 Differences?
I am trying to figure a way to quickly tell the 67/72 trucks apart from the outside. I know it's easy to seperate every 2 years by the grill (quickest way), but between each of the 2 year series groups is what I mean.
So far, through this board and reading some catalogues, I came up with this: 67/68 Side markers on front fenders....68 has them 71/72 Rear view mirror mount...72 is glued onto glass What about 69/70? I know there are more differences on the above, such as hoods, vent window mounts, door panels, etc., but I was thinking of fast IDs. These 2 years seem to be the toughest to distinguish between. Just curious, but what the heck. |

i am curious about this also.
on another note, what about GMC's? 67 has no marker lights and sloped hood and grille w/ writing 68 has lights, and sloped hood, and regular GMC grille 69 has square hood 70 ? 71 has grille with black stripe 72 ? EDIT: dont all 71's have Disc Brake stickers on the tailgate? also, '72 doors are different...armrest is molded into door panel, there is a dimple with a philips head screw under the vent, and there is an exterior dimple

The difference I know of is the grill insert. Someone else will have to explain the details. I don't want to mess it up.

70 has 7 distinct sections to the upper and lower grill inserts. The 69 is uniform all of the way along.
Other than that, i think they are pretty close. david

70 could come with a tilt in 69 it wasnt an option. Those are the only differences I know of other then different color options.

the grille is a subtle difference. if you look close the black parts has 7 horizontal spacers in the silver paint about an inch wide on the upper and lower part of the grille. i can get a pic of my 70 grille to show what i'm talking about if you need clarity. other than that there is no difference. 71-72 are almost identical except for the rear view mirrors and doors.

Custom and CST models have slightly different door panel trim, 70's have phoney woodgrain along the top of the panel, 69's don't.

I thought the 70 had slightly wider rear axles than 69.

That must be something the trucks had. My 1970 CST Blazer had the scroll pattern door panels, but never had the woodgrain on them. I am the original owner and the truck had a March 20, 1970 build date. Another 1970 difference is the front axle change from closed to open knuckles. |

Truckhead
A couple of differences that I use to identify a bare cab are: 1971 was the only year that had the raised metal pad for the rear view mirror mount. There was a vent on the inside door jamb near the vin plate on 1971 and 1972. The gas pedal mount and fuse box location were different between 68 and 69. As alway's other folks should feel free to correct me if I am incorrect in this line of thought. Have fun

Hi All!
'69-'70 differences: Cst door panels; '69 should have "bowtie", or plain scrolls. '70 should have woodgrain insert. CST headliners aren't a real good indicator, as '70's had them, and so did some mid to late '69's. If you know your color options for a given year, it's fairly easy to tell a '69 from a '70.......'70's had alot of new color options that weren't avail. in '69. Of course, the inner plastic grille is different. But somewhere mid year, the outer shell also changed. The outer shell difference is hard to notice, at first, but they did change. I've asked for clarification on this, but everyone seem to think they're the same. Still looking for an explanation!?? If you happen to be following one, just check the rear track. '69's look "bow-legged" so to speak, from the rear. They have a noticible "narrow track" rear axle. '70's have the later "wide" rear axle. I'm sure they're more differences, but I can't remember them all. To all....... Can you tell a bare '67 cab from a bare '68 cab at quick glance? OK, early '67's carried over the "fawn" interior paint from the "60-"66" gen. trucks, but mid year- on and higher trim level trucks got the body color interiors, same as the '68's. Big window/small window won't tell you much, because the big window could be had in '67 also. Give up?............Count the number of "door-stop" holes in the door jamb, on the striker plate side. '68's had one more "door-stop" rubber on each side than '67's. Mike
