Rubber door bumpers.. where do they go?

Does anyone know where the correct location is for the door rubber bumpers (shown below)? I bought a set of four (supposedly 2 per door) and I don't see any existing holes or provisions for these in my doors or jams??

I think I recall a post that said they didn't start using them until '64 but it might have been '63.

Does anyone have pictures of where they go on 64-66? I wouldn't mind adding them to my 63 even if they weren't factory.

Checkout this thread. Shows 60, 61 & 64 with bumpers.....don't know which applications got them, but they do seem available on several years.

Thanks for the link.. ok so in reading that thread it shows two different size door bumpers (per LMC "60-63 are the small ones and the ones for 64-66 are the big ones"). Consensus says all 64-66 had them and some show 60-61 with them but no 62-63.

I want to use them on my 63 Short Bed Stepside and my 62 Suburban to prevent the doors from over closing and door to jamb contact causing paint chips. I know the door wedge (below the latch) should help this but it can become a binding point if adjusted too far in, or if adjusted perfectly and the door is slammed. The door bumpers would never bind since the mating surfaces (inside door edge and rubber bumper face) never insert into one another.

I have adjusted my 63 perfectly and its not giving me any problems but my 62 is.. I have my door gaps perfect and latch adjusted perfect to when the door is closed and weather stripping is in, the door is pushed out flush with the outside of the body. Problem is if you slam the door or push in (all doors can be pushed in a little beyond fully latched) the upper door edge becomes close to the inside body seams (where roof and gutter sheet metal and cab sheet metal and jamb sheet metal all fold over each other along with beautiful factory seam filler etc).

The Rubber bumpers should prevent this.. That's why I wanted to use them and I am sure that's why GM started using them.

So any pictures of where 64-66's have them so I can mimic the look and application on my pre 64's is greatly appreciated

Once I get some pics, I will do my 63 first and then the 62 and post pics and results here for everyone.

here is where they go on a 64-66 (hole in the white paint)
however since 63 uses a different door latch than a 64-66, I wonder if you should use them??
it might create problems, or it might be no big deal... maybe tape a chunk of rubber that is the same consistency in that spot and check it out before you drill.

What/how is the best way time install the bumpers? I whittled down the part that goes in the frame on a set I had a long time ago and even tried a soap/ water mix and they wouldn't go in so have never had them but would like some

You could try opening up the hole in the body a hair bigger with a drill bit but be careful because too much and they will not fit snug or fall out.

It sounds like you're referring to the suspension bump stops rather than the door bumpers. If you are referring to the door bumpers, pull from inside the cab with one hand while pushing from outside the cab with the other. They pop in quite easily.

Little bit of dish soap and some water will help it go in....windex has worked too. Twist in as you install and it should pop in.

Nope. Not talking about suspension bump stops. Also there isn't a way of pulling the door bumpers from the inside. I may have had the wrong ones as when I ordered them through Obsolete Chevy Parts there was only one type listed.

Ok, write up time... Here is my install of the rubber door bumpers on my 1962 Suburban.


Here you have a good aligned door gap when fully closed:



But if over slammed or pushed in more you have this:


And that can cause contact here and possibly cause paint chipping:





Solution.. install door bumpers...

1. Tools I used:



2. Bumpers I used:



3. Mark where bumpers will go:






4. Center-punch before drilling:



5. After 1/4" holes are drilled, insert bumpers:





Tips...

I dabbed a bit of silicon on each bumper before I inserted them into the drilled holes for rust prevention and sealing.

I also found using a 5/32" drill bit inserted into the hole in the rubber door bumper helped install them easier.
