Engine decode

I have searched the FAQ section and the forum and am still confused on reading an engine code. My 66 did not come with the original engine. I was told it is a 283 and the code on the front of the block is V0930DE. From what I can tell using the sites that explain it is that is was built in the Flint Michigan plant on Sept 30, of what year who knows? The DE code seems to be either a 1958 from a full sized Malibu? Yeah right, a Malibu in 58? or a 62 from body code A or X. Or it could be a 307? What am I missing and where can I find out what year the engine was manufactured and less importantly, what it came out of? Did I miss something? Is there another source or number on the block I need to look for? Thanks folks.

Look here for the locations of your casting codes.

Re: Engine decode

The DE suffix code is either a '62 283 or a '68 307. You will need to get the casting number and look that up to determine just what you have. Between the two, I would rather have the 307.

Re: Engine decode

Yes, DE code was used in 1958 283 car, but it was also used on 1965, 1966 and 1967 283 car. DE also shows up as 1968 307 car. If your build date on block ends with a 5, 6 or 7, I would say the best bet is it is '65-'67 283 195hp 2bbl. If build date on block ends with a 8, it would be a '58 283 or '68 307 ? To make it more confusing, what if the '68 car was built in late '67, block build date would have a 7, instead of an 8. Or the '65 car was built in late '64, block build date would have a 4. Pretty confusing, might need a small block expert to answer this.
