Thumbs up pic for 1970blazin

Here's the pic I promised. I plan on making a false bottom to cover the wiring. She works great as it is.

Thanks! I think that is what I am going to do- I just don't want to have to open the glovebox everytime I change the station. Do you hate having to open the console everytime you change the station?? I don't know what to do! I don't want to advertise that I have a good stereo (like in the dash) 'cause then I think someone will want to steal it!

Thumbs up

I've got my Kenwood in the console and it
becomes second nature to lift the door and
adjust the volume or change stations by "feel".

1970 Blazin,

If your stereo has an infra-red remote, you can use simple off-the-shelf components to do infra-red repeating. You'd have to put a little sensor someplace you could hit with the remote, and then run a couple of wires into the console. A little infra-red emitter fastens to the face of the unit, and relays the commands from the remote.

This stuff works great for my house stereo, and would be even easier in a car, because it's designed to work on +12v IIRC.

bpmcgee- Do you know where I could pick up an infrared repeater? That sounds like a great idea! If I got one of those I would probably put my stereo in the glovebox! Thanks for the info..that is what I have been looking for - a way to hide the stereo without haveing to open either the glovebox or the console to change stations or adjust volume! Thanks again!!

The company that is most well known for making them is Xantech

It takes a little time to understand exactly what it is their system is doing, but it's actually really simple. Let me know if you need any more help.

Once it's in?

I have a 68 chevy short bed pick up that had a factory radio am/fm cass, that was from a 96 chevy 1500, it was about 6 to 8inches open wide & looked like hell, I got a dash from a 72chevy pick-up and cut a line right under the dash pad, that way when the pad goes back on you can not see the lines also a little fiberglass would not hurt either, but I also used a temp plate to cut a new c.d. player in & soon to do the same thing on my 71k-5 blazer I to will send pictures of it.

That infa red remote is a great idea- I built a little plywood "box" to house my stereo in the console- it sits vertical- all the wire is under the cup holders- wires come in the front bottom of the console,no need for a false bottom, looks good as well- covered it with some colored felt from the walmart craft section, almost looks high dollar! I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Has anyone put a late-model steering wheel with the radio/cd control buttons in their rig? That's a mod I want to definitely look into. Unfortunately, that's about 10th on my list right now.

D, Here's my console with "custom-built" radio cabinet. Even has a cd holder. That repeater system would make tuning the radio a breeze- now it's a bit cumbersome- open, fidget, hit the wrong button, etc.
Good Luck! If you're still friends with your carpenter buddy (side panels) he could design a console box, you could sell templates.....

Here's what I did, still haven't had a chance to put the ashtray lid back on but it's either going to fold down or slide down. CD fits in fine, but I usually use the remote since it's a bit hard to get to all the buttons. No way you can get it out though and once the lid is back on you'll never know it's there.

Slick, Michigank5. I've seen that before and plan on doing the same. Keep us updated on how you put the ashtray lid on.

This is what I did- Stock AM in dash- Cool Kenwood in the glove box and hooked up that infrared repeater. It was an easy hook up- just put one end where it will get to the front of the stereo (inside of glove box door) and put the other end where you want to point the remote- WORKS GREAT!!!
