Project Betty 51 5 window
Well just picked up this one family owned 51 5 window, it's a original survivor and was the parts truck for a Chevrolet dealer in Eastern Oregon for all its life, never even left the town until this past weekend. Going to keep her all original for now I think, just replace the glass and some little things inside that need attention, she has some rust but not too bad and is stright as a arrow, never been hit and purrs like a kitten too.

Re: Project Betty 51 5 window
After a good wash and steam cleaning, removing the old broken glass in the doors, she looks pretty darn good so far! Now its time to start the parts search... Thats the original paint on the fire wall cant believe how nice it looks, now I have to figure out what color the interior was, the door panels look black as well as the headliner, does the VIN help with that in these trucks?

Re: Project Betty 51 5 window
Thanks, I`m headed to Monore for the Swap meet tomorrow to pick up some parts that are missing and to replace the grill bars that are dented that I found, its pretty fun to drive the way it is, I`m going to pretty much leave it as is for now, I might change out the wheels for some baby moons I found.

Re: Project Betty 51 5 window
Well after a trip to the swap meet, we picked up a decent donor grill, a set of three bed wood rails, front bumper filler panel and a few new parts like a pair of tail lights, floormat and a rearview mirrior and when we got home we had our original outside drivers mirrior too. Also replaced the NAPA fuel fitler with a AC glass original type and cleaned up all the underhood wireing that someone had messed up. And thanks to a fellow member here picked up a set of Baby moons and tires, man what a difference.

Re: Project Betty 51 5 window
Here`s a few more, after rebuilding the seat, replacing the door panels, headliner and rubber floormat, we also replaced all the interior lights and tail lights with repops. I should have taken pictures of the pile of old grease that had hardened in the eastern Oregon sun over the past 64 years, it filled my shop trash can and after a good long day of scraping and wire brushing all the grease fittings took new grease, I couldnt believe it! Also changes all the fluids, this had obviously been done before, the gear oil looked pretty good but I wanted to start fresh.

Re: Project Betty 51 5 window
Looking good. Be careful w/that glass fuel filter. If it breaks you have an inferno on your hands...There's a guy named fredo on the main board that had that happen....

Re: Project Betty 51 5 window
Finished the bed today, used the old strips with stainless bolts and two coats of Wadco teak oil, just what I was looking for.

Re: Project Betty 51 5 window
Yes all but one, it had been bent so I replaced it with another used one but no rust, and the original cross sills and exhaust shield were the same, really amazing for a 51. I did have to cut off about 50% of the bolts but I expected them all to be frozen, a few days of soakingwith PB blaster and a impact with the 8 point 1/2 in socket and they broke loose
