Did any of the 67-72 K10 4x4s come with a 3-speed manual on column?
I've seen grannys and automatics but not 3 on tree.
Did any come like that? |

Yes, 67-72 K-series (4x4) Pickups, Suburbans, Panels and Blazers all came standard with a 3OTT column shift setup as base equipment.
While sellers of such trucks tend to think of them as valuable rare variants in reality they are speed range limited.

Blazers came coupled to a Dana20 transfer case. Pickups and Suburbans (I think all of those) came with NP205

Re: Did any of the 67-72 K10 4x4s come with a 3-speed manual on column?
Thanks to all.
I'm going to look at a 72 4x4 and I wanna make sure it was originally a 4x4 or at least on the right year k10 frame. I read in another post that the rear should have staggered shock mounts on the back and the frame should be straight (not curved to the outside) over the rear-end area. Any other things I should look for? How about the engine frame mounts? Should they be like the SBC or 6-cyl mounts on a 67-72 C10 or do they have the cup-style mounts like the later models and 72 BBC mounts? It's 3OTT and has a SBC. He doesn't have a title, just a bill of sale. I'm not sure if the SPID sheet is there or not either. |

My truck is a 3ott and I wouldn't have it any other way. It is fun to drive (and good for dates if you have a bench seat!) but as the other member said, it's "speed challenged."
It's hard to change gears in a hurry....but with the low gearing those 3ott's normally got, there wasn't much of a hurry you could ever be in. |

Re: Did any of the 67-72 K10 4x4s come with a 3-speed manual on column?
If it's not authentic, either the 4wd crossmembers were swapped-in or it's a later 4wd frame. The crossmembers were riveted, so look for that. The '73-up frames were longer up front of the cab, so the frame tips would be cut and the core support moved back. Then, there's the shocks being both to the front.

Mine is a 72' and came stock with a 250 inline 6 and a 3ott, although the six is long gone and a 383 resides in there now.

Re: Did any of the 67-72 K10 4x4s come with a 3-speed manual on column?
Hey everyone, I am bringing this thread back from the dead.
I was always under the impression that the Rockwell T-221 transfer case that was available from 1967 to about 1969-ish was ONLY available behind either the SM-420 in 1967 only, and the SM-465 from 1968 to 1969. Beginning in 1969 with the NP-205 phasing out the T-221, there was now an option for automatics as well as 3 speed on the tree manual transmissions. Has anyone ever seen either a 3 speed or an automatic transmission coupled to a Rockwell T-221? Was there another even more obscure transfer case available in limited configurations from 1967 to 1969? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks, Clay

I know automatics are out of the question with the 221 but I’ve never really given thought to the three on the tree with a 221. I’m gonna say it’s probably not likely.

Very cool Mark, thanks for sharing that.
That is a bad ass spid. Manual throttle, Buckets, No spin rear, Posi front, shoulder belts??? Damn the cool factor is real! Pretty weird to have ordered the 327 and axle upgrades but no 4speed.

Quite a while. I think this was up for sale several years ago, if I recall correctly. But I don’t know if anyone ever rescued it. I do remember seeing some discussion on here about its front axle posi. Yep, it’s loaded.

Re: Did any of the 67-72 K10 4x4s come with a 3-speed manual on column?
Man, that thing is incredible! I guess that solves the 4-speed vs. 3-speed mystery for me. For some reason, I just find the Rockwell transfer cases interesting. I know that a lot of folks out there switch to NP-205's, but there is just a cool factor with the Rockwell's that I can't seem to shake.
I posted this in the 4x4 forum a few months ago, but back in January, I was able to score a NOS Rockwell T-221. It had been sitting in a warehouse since the early 70's and was purchased as part of the entire inventory by a guy in the early 90's. He in turn had it setting in a shed ever since. It still has the cardboard protectors on the splines, and when I cracked open the top of the case, it was pristine inside with the machine marks still visible on the gears. I would love to be able to see the adapter that sits in between the 3-speed transmission and the Rockwell though. That has to be a very rare thing indeed! Here are some pics of the NOS Rockwell that I have. Clay Clay

Re: Did any of the 67-72 K10 4x4s come with a 3-speed manual on column?
I have a core Rockwell T221 transfer case and SM 465 married unit. Gotta be 1968. Possibly GMC or Canadian. I bought it at a junker in Tucson [long way from the Great White North] but IIRC the donor truck was a GMC. Yes it's a 465, not a 420. I'm not hallucinating.
[Well not about that at least.]
