Original heat stove finish - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Looking to find out what the heat stoves were coated with from the factory if anything. I have heard rumors that they were black but not confirmed.

Any assistance on this is greatly appreciated,

Subscribed. I believe they were black. I'm also interested to know what chemical or process can/should be used to remove surface rust from the heat stove?

One poster used PR20 (aka high temperature) for their stove, in gray. Not sure they make it in black.

Not a CST thing. If you do not have one ,it was probably discarded or rotted away. See the photo. The photo is a supposed untouched 80 mile truck that is 100% correct.

It solves a mystery for me as well. it looks like they were coated the same as the heat stove tube and air cleaner housing.

ok, so what exactly does it do. It obviously has something to do with warm air warming something?

I assume it used manifold heat to warm up the carburetor faster

It routes warm air up to a thermostat controlled valve in air cleaner housing. Helps during cold start up. Most have Been removed...

Not sure what they painted it with but they were painted black from the factory. I painted mine with gloss black high temp bbq. Here is a pic

Really? Unneeded comment. Yes I'm running an edlbrock carb. Whats wrong with that? Second of all, so what if they are backwards? I have seen them run eaither way and that is how they were run when I pulled the engine apart so that is how I put it back together. If you feel the need to say something about the hoses then just politely let me know by saying "I believe your heater hoses are backward" instead of "FAIL"

Yeah, and most trucks drive like crap. It's actually not for startup, it's for cold-weather driveability. In many vehicles (eg: Impala big block) only automatic trans vehicles had them.

It's one of those things people throw away because they don't understand, then they wind up driving with two feet when the truck's cold or it'll stall.

I have one on my 11 second car. Maybe cars in the 10s don't need them. Trucks in the 17s should.

As for the color, from the factory I do believe they were black. Three weeks later they're all rust colored though.

Tom, I repainted mine black. It made it about 4 months at the most, now it's rust colored again. I used some parts house high temp black. looked good black though. Come to think of it, I didn't even get a pic when it was black again haha

I may have to disagree with the above posters. I believe they were bright zinc or natural finish. I had a NOS one that is natural finish. I have also seen the back mounting plates that were not rusted with natural or zinc finish.

I believe they were black from the factory and started rusting soon thereafter as pointed out above. I painted mine with POR 20 high temp grey (cast iron) to match the exhaust manifolds, and I thought it looked better. For factory correctness and durability, I would use a high-temp manifold paint rated at 1500+ degrees, not the engine paint rated for 500. I do not know if there is an off the shelf paint in black that is rated that high, but POR makes one so I would assume Eastwood and others do as well. POR is rated at 2000 and my manifolds and heat shield still look good after being daily driven.

Yes it is going to take some serious high temp stuff to keep it from burning off. I thought also about checking into black ceramic coating if that is possible.

If I ever find a good one I plan to zinc plate it. Most I have seen have become paper thin and quite fragile. I have the caswell plating kit and using it could put a nice thick layer of zinc over the entire surface (inside and outside) and then topping it off with some sort of high temp paint. Should keep the thing from rotting away as they tend to do.

Use muriatic acid to remove the rust. Then coat with Caswell high temperature flat black powdercoat. Same basic coating as 'ceramic headers' but flat black.

Incidentally, one of these posters covered their heat stove with PR epoxy to add strength, then PR-20 for a top coat. Also sounds like a good plan.
