Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
LOL, Trying to throw a little humor in there... because Exhaust is a tough subject. We are going to do the Exhaust in a few days, and based on my prior experience which is only with Flowmaster's, What are you guys using, and what do you like?
I know everyone's opinion is different, but I have been out of the performance loop for a few years and don't really know what's new out there to consider. I like the hollowed tones of Flowmaster, but will definitely consider alternatives if there is proven better out there. Right now it has a basic stock 350 in it but planning to do a 6.0/4L80 swap later down the line, I imagine will do a little work to the LS just to make it sound better, cam, headwork etc... Was thinking of just doing a 2.5 inch with flowmasters and dumps before the rear... or maybe run out the back... I know Dumps are messy and blow up dust. Let me know your guys thoughts and experiences. Thanks, Joe

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
As far as mufflers go it's your truck and it has to sound the way you want it to sound not the way I or anyone else thinks would be right.
I had turbos on my 71 GMC with a 350 and loved it but the 48 with a six gets a pair of glasspacks because I want that same rap rap sound that the sixes we ran in the 60's had with dual pipes. I hope I have ridden in the last rig that has turbos and exhaust that dumps under it in front of the axle. One three hundred mile day in a freind's truck was more than my sanity could handle with that. It might be ok for a bar hopper rig that never leaves the city limits but it's mind numbing on long road trips at serious speed. I ran the exhaust out in front of the wheels on my 48, my 65 and my 71 pickup before I put tail pipes on the 71 and while it is fun to listen to the exhaust noise bounce back off the Johnson barriers on the freeway the drone of the exhaust exiting almost under you gets real tiresome on long trips. Again that is personal opinion from personal experience. I ran Thrush side pipes on the 48 for several years after I put the first V8 in it. When I went to new exhaust tail pipes that exited at the back corners of the box and glasspacks made life a lot better.

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
When I ran the exhaust on my 81 truck I turned to ebay for a set of magnaflows. Much to my surprise I found a great deal on a pair for $60 plus shipping. When I got them I noticed something didn't look right because magnaflow mufflers have their name stamped into the housing. These didn't, I went back to the ad and realized I had bought magflow...not magnaflow.. but I kept them. They are 2 1/2" stainless straight thru design.. in on one side and exit in center ..that looked like they would be loud as all heck..but they sound great not to loud.just right. No regrets. I used them on my 350 and kept them when I did my 6.0 ls swap

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
I had the exhaust guy run my pipes with short glass packs out the side in front of the rear wheels. Then I found some 45* tips to turn the exhaust slightly down and to the rear. Sounds good and doesn't rattle the cab on long runs.

I like flowmasters, but I hate the drone. We have 24in glasspacks on our 96 Lt1 Fleetwood and it sounds pretty good. I've been looking at Borla and others for my truck. Ideally I want rumble on acceleration but no drone on the highway. Subbin to thread.

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
i had flowmasters on a newer truck, and i liked the sound a lot. but on a daily driver on Long Island, the flowmasters rusted very quick.
i just did the exhaust on my '57 with a SBC 350. i went with stainless steel pipes and 23" cherry bombs. sounds real nice!

Running 2 1/2" flowmaster knockoffs from Jeggs, sounds good and didn't break the bank..

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
I just changed my 18" cherry bombs out for a set of Borla Pro XS, they are striaght through, but a fair size, so they are not too loud. I was impressed with them.

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
I am in the same boat.......trying to figure out what to run.
I have some cheap turbo knock offs that the sounds great at 1500rpm and higher......but sound like crap at idle. |

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
I think I'm gonna go for something like this... My only issue is stirring up dust however turning the dumps inward like this is should help a bit.
Only other option I'm considering I think is ran out the back, which can be changed on down the road... I know this is going to effect cab sound but right now it'll just be driven around town and short distances... Once we get the new engine in and decide to cruise more it'll probably be ran out so its not so annoying inside.

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
Im running Sanderson shortys with true duals and FLowmasters and am very pleased in terms of both sound and performance. I personally like the FLowmaster "drone" (mine kicks in right around 2000 RPM) and when I get on it, it has a real nice bark to it.

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
What model Flowmasters? There's quite a bit of difference in sound levels between the 40, super 44 and 50 series. I'm getting the exhaust done on my '58 next week, so it's crunch time. I'm leaning toward super 44's out the back.

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
I have always used the 40 series, I had 3 inch 2 chambers on my old 84 pickup but it had a pretty stout small block in it.
I'm thinking either 2.5 inch 2 chamber 40's or try out the super 44's myself.

Re: Exhaust... Don't shoot! :-)
I gave a listen to the sound comparison between the series on Flowmaster's site. The super 44 is still plenty "throaty" but has a deeper tone than the 40 series that seems to be more popular on trucks.
