1950s 2 ton?

I don't know why but I've got a hankering to build a big truck. I tried to do a search on this forum but it takes me off on a google hunt. If I'm right I under stand that the 1/2 ,3/4 and 1 ton( aka 3100, 3600, 3800) 47-54 cab and front ends are the same deminsional size. My question is when you jump to the 1 1/2- 2 ton (aka 4400 6400) trucks what are the differences..if I understand right all cabs firewall back are the same for all 1/2-2 tons but firewall foward is different. Does anyone have the measurable differences in these cabs. I am looking at getting a 4400 or 6400 cab to build.

Re: 1950s 2 ton?

The front end (fender, hood,& grille) are around 6" longer, 4" wider, and 4" taller. The hight of the fender is cut into the depth of the hood, as well as adding about 2" to the bottom. The wheel well opening is also larger. I have both front ends sitting in the barn. The 2 ton is a '48 GMC and the 1/2 ton is a '49 GMC.

The cabs are exactly the same. My 1/2 ton front end will bolt directly to my 2 ton cab and look as though it was a factory 1/2 ton truck.

Re: 1950s 2 ton?

The cabs are different in 47-49, 50-53, 54-55 with 51 being an odd ball . While they look the same there are some subtle differences some make a difference when swapping parts some don't. 1.5 an 2 ton front ends don't work on 1/2 to one ton. 47-50 doors are the same 51 is alone and only uses 51 door, 52-55 1st use the same door. 47.2 to 49.1 have a center hung can mount in the rear. 49.2 to 54 have side mounts.
The list goes on.

Re: 1950s 2 ton?

Thanks guys..that's what I was looking for. I have a 55 1st 3100 so I knew there were differences in the cab but the front end is what I was trying to figure out..can't find any around here to look at.I am wanting to do a ls powered , lowered flatbed dually out of one. I found a 1950 6400 but its 400 miles away...seems like they all are.
