When you remove a factory headliner, what's left behind?
Thinking of removing my factory headliner and associated trim to swap into another truck. What can I expect underneath it? Will there be plenty of battle scars?
Cheers Taylor

I'm interested in the answer here... I'm thinking about pulling what little cab interior there is in my truck and leaving it until I get to that part of my project...

Re: When you remove a factory headliner, what's left behind?
My '85 actually looked very nice under the ratty old headliner. My roof is painted the same color as the rest of the interior, and since it had been protected by the headliner, looked mint. I even considered leaving the headliner out, but had already purchased a new one.
That said, if you reinstall the A/B pillar and upper trim without a headliner, I don't think it'll look right. |

My plan was to transfer all the trim to the new truck as well... Leaving the donor truck without the headliner or plastic trim.
Would prefer it ended up looking like a truck that didn't have a headliner or trim originally.

I wanted to pull all the interior bits from the dash and doors up anyway including pillars. The pillars, door trim and headliner need to be replaced and it's so ratty anyway.

All there is left after removing all the headliner and trim is small holes made by the small screws that attach the trim IIRC.

Re: When you remove a factory headliner, what's left behind?
I pulled the headliner out of my Silverado, and put the trim back up. The inside of the roof is shaped just like the headliner.
Disclaimer: I'm not fussy about originality or show quality. My truck ain't pretty and I don't care.

All but one of my trucks was headliner free from the factory.

Re: When you remove a factory headliner, what's left behind?
Thanks, all
Sounds like I'll give it a shot, hopefully it matches up OK with the rest of my interior.

Re: When you remove a factory headliner, what's left behind?
One caution - my 83 has a dense fiberglass backing on the headliner and it does help keep the heat out in the summer, and the cold out in the winter, and does add some sound insulation. If you can find that liner with a good fiberglass backing you should be able to get it recovered locally for about $50. It just pops in with a friction fit above the headliner trim pieces.

Yep... That's why I want to swap it into my daily driver.
I'm going to end up selling the donor truck.
