Rear marker lens without lights?

I bought a pair of rear marker lens. One is for lights and the other isn't, because there's not a hole in back of it.

I read where these trucks didn't come with lights until 1970. Until then they were just reflectors. So my really ignorant question is, can the pre-1970 lenses be converted somehow, or is it best to just sell this "reflector" and locate one that accepts a light?

The back looks like this one:

Sell the ones you have and buy the correct ones.

Learn something new everyday, I had no idea there was a difference. The guy shouldn't have sold them in a pair and my ignorance cost me. Just what I wanted, more items to sell. Thanks for the response.

Re: Rear marker lens without lights?

GM called them "side marker reflectors". IMHO even trucks that were built without the lighted marker should have them added. Every little bit helps in today's traffic.

Re: Rear marker lens without lights?

It appears the 911165 is a reflector only, while the 916087 is for a light. The 916087 was a replacement part for 911165, as it works for either. The guy advertised them as 916087. He may not have known any better. Obviously, I didn't.

Re: Rear marker lens without lights?

68 and newer had the holes in the fenders for reflectors /or lights , I put trans am lights in my 68 , scrapped the reflectors , I think 72 and newer all had lights , I have seen 71s with reflectors , may depend on trim level

68 was reflectors, 69 was the change over year and have seen both on 69 trucks, and 70 was standard with lights i believe.

Re: Rear marker lens without lights?

Ha, the seller claims these (below) are a matching pair. Both boxes are for 911165, but someone penciled in 916087 on one of them, which would be mostly correct, it's just not the original box, which is no big deal. He advertised them as 916087 (red font, below).

I asked for a refund on at least the "reflector", but he says I'm "being ridiculous". At this point I won't say who it is, but if he keeps it up you bet I will.

Interesting. The guy sent me an email stating only "I'll send you a check for the one"................However, what do you have to trade? Note: this reflector is mint, and has a nice gasket. It even comes with the right box.....Ha!...."mine" sure didn't.

Sounds right to me. I wonder what motivated GM to show "68" on the front and backs of the lenses for lights (i.e. 916087)? The originals on my 71 read the same, and I've never seen one marked anything else.

Meanwhile, they show 67 and 71 (that I've seen) on the tails, yet the mold is exact. Funny thing is, one of my tails is 71 and the other 67. I've owned this since 89 and never replaced one. Together they're worth $2, but I'll probably box them. One box for scraps and another for the original packages, just cuz I'm anal. Hate that word.

Re: Rear marker lens without lights?

68 were side marker reflectors.
69 side marker reflectors were standard. Optional illumination RPO UB3 was $10.80 and IIRC it was an overlay wiring harness dedicated to the side marker lamps.
70 the illuminated side marker lamps were standard.

Probably.

Was near Edwards yesterday. Spent some time in San Diego.
