Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

Whats even more fun is pulling out the whole bunch of them in one shot on the side of the highway the because one catches on fire and ya can't tell which one it is! At least it was fused.

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

Very true. At least no fire, but after looking closer I'm sprites there hasn't been.

I'm just hoping when I get it sorted the motor isn't fried!!

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

Mine started with my buddy asking why my "courtesy lights" were on in my '57. It didn't have "courtesy lights" lol.
My '63 had the same mess when I got it. Took one wire out at a time until it didn't run... then put that wire back in.

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

That's how I cleaned up wiring on my bike. It's kinda fun. Makes the wife nervous though haha

Ill be sorting and cleaning it up at the same time, hopefully with it still running as it is my primary enclosed vehicle.

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

SO I finally got a chance to dig in to the Spaghetti bowl.

found some good things and a whole lot of bad things.

Good things
Wiper Motor is NOT fried!!
Heater Fan does work Bonus
made some test leads and got both of them running.

Bad things..... everything else

There appears to be at least 3 different sets of Wires,
probably get $50 if I pull it all and sell the copper

Pulled wiper wiring from bundle and found no breaks or bare spots to show where short was. hooked up outside of bundle and works fine ???

Discovered when i move the wires something shorts to radio and it will turn on and shock the *#%@ out of me.

Plan is to run some flex conduit under dash and start rewiring one system at a time as I go through them and get it right. might still go for a new harness down the road but it is not in the budget right now.

I know some of you have done this and any tips would be appreciated.

Also looking for recomendations for replacing the fuse box, this one is pretty busted up and nasty.

Thanks

Hooligan

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

OK we are back to the same issue only worse!!

Wiper tested fine, until first time I actually needed them.
About 5 minutes into torrential downpour SMOKE !!!!
Melted Insulation on the hot wire to the motor, before fuse blew.

Test leads allow motor to turn still but now I am afraid to drive my rainy day ride in the rain.

Would a leak around the motor somehow be allowing it to short?

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

Are you getting water in where the wiper motor is mounted? Its a fairly easy fix if it is.

Remove the wiper arms. Remove the cowl panel in front of the windshield. Disconnect the wiper transmission arms from the motor (1 nut). Go under dash and remove the wiring from the motor and there are 3 small bolts that hold the motor to the dash. Reinstall in reverse.

I upgraded my single speed to a dual speed a few weeks ago. Was a one man job.

Main thing is to not change the timing on the motor / linkage.

If you do, its easy to reset, but must be done with the motor out. You'll see 2 hash marks on the face of the motor (faces the firewall) that will be 90* of each other. The linkage will have 2 hash marks also and they just need to mirror each other. This will ensure the wiper arms travel the correct path and return where they are suppose too.

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

Heres a pic of the timing tabs (look at 3 and 6 o clock positions) I was talking about. The linkage that attaches to the motor will also have these marks. Just make sure they mirror each other if you feel its moved any on removal.

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

Thanks c-10. Not for sure about the water, but its my guess, because only seems to happen in hard rain. I didn't get a chance to dig under there when it was fresh to check for moisture.

That bit about the timing marks is why I was worried about taking it apart without asking on here. Thanks for the pic!!

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

I was Able to get the motor pulled the other day and finally had time to tear it down yesterday.... but forgot to take pics. (still have it out Ill get some pics later)

All the seals were shot and the little rubber pieces that hold motor to firewall fell apart and motor fell off with out removing the hardware.

Disassembled the motor and transmission parts.
found the main shaft that turns linkage had some corrosion and was pretty rough and hard to turn.

Also the tops plastic gear teeth are folded down about 1/4 of the way around. think I did this when I was trying to take the drive arm off unfortunately.

I think I got it rebuilt and cleaned up enough to work, until I can upgrade to 2 speed motor.

Everything I have been able to find says 63 and up, which I understand is when the 2 speed came out so that makes sense.

Read through threads in FAQ and still not sure.

Will one of these be a direct replacement on the 60?

the motor in mine sits parallel to firewall if that makes any difference.

Thanks
Hooligan

Re: Windshield Wipers Quit

As far as I know the 60-63 motors are interchangeable. The 3 rubber bushings are available aftermarket that hold the motor to the firewall. Make sure to reattach the ground (fits under the right side bolt).

And the 2 speed motors were optioned in 1960-66
