What are these for??

I was under my truck adjusting the brakes and noticed these brackets beside the bump stops on the frame.what are they for??

Sorry if its a stupid question, but how does it help with heavy loads? Is it in case the bump stops dont hold up ,it prevents the frame from sitting on the axle?

What piece are you asking about?

There is a helper spring at the left of the picture. But the thing next to the bump stop is the panhard bar. It keeps the rear end centered, so it doesn't move to the side, especially when cornering.

The bump stop is the bullet shaped piece of rubber hanging down from the frame.

Im talking about the lil drop down bracket that is riveted to the frame beside the bump stop.if you follow the frame between the panhard bar and the coil spring cup you will see it right beside the bump stop

Leon, apparently, yes. Interestingly enough, there's another recent thread asking about the same backets, and the pictures on that thread show them on both sides.

Yes they are on both sides. I have not seen any other refrence to them nor do i see a real purpose yet.

Aren't thry the mounting pads for overload springs, on my 68 parts truck it had overload coil springs and that is right where they sat.

I've heard of helper springs but they look like this...

It is a 1972 gmc c20 all original.it has a 350 with a th350 trans and coil spring susppension amd dana 60 rear end. It has the helper spring behind the axle.

I have never seen those, the 67 parts truck I had had coil springs mounted on the axle. They were small and they rode on the frame. I wish I had a picture.

They are the "positive stops" for the rear suspension travel.

The rubber bump stop is a graduated rate. The positive stop is for when you've used all the rubber and need to prevent overtravel. It is an attempt to save the rubber attachment to live for another day and/or localize any frame damage to a part that can be replaced.

You will find a positive stop next to the rubber bumper on the front lower control arm, too (different design but same concept). At least on the square bodies, anyway.
