Re: A rare cl find

That is pretty rare. My uncle used to have an '85 K10 SB 6.2 diesel in two tone brown. Low miles and super clean truck that got awesome fuel mileage.

Re: A rare cl find

No such thing as a factory 350N or 350DX Olds diesel in the CK RV trucks after 1980. 81-92 were all Normally Aspirated 6.x engines.

Factory turbo on the squarebody 6.2L diesels? Absolutely not.
Dealer installed Banks Sidewinder with dealer backed warranty? Yes.
GM Factory installed turbo diesel before the 1993 model year? NO!!

A complete working Banks Sidewinder turbo setup on a good running 6.2 is worth the asking price.

Lee Swanger has or had a short box 6.2

FYI, The 6.2 came out for the 1982 model year. 1981 2WDs could be had with the 5.7 Olds. My great grandpa bought one new. Also 1992 was the first year for the factory 6.5 turbo. Like you said, anything pre-1992 was a dealer installed Banks system.

Re: A rare cl find

The 1981 6.2 would've been a 1982 model year truck. They could be purchased in October of 1981. My grandfather bought one.
The T400 CK with the 6.5L turbodiesel could be had in August/September of 1992 but it was a 1993 model year truck. I bought one of those.

1981 350 Olds Diesel trucks were rare rare rare if they were not just late production or leftover 1980 trucks. The parts books deny they existed.

I'm not sure but it was the new body style and it had a 5.7, It probably had a very early 1981 build date or a late 1980 date but I can't remember. I know the 6.2 trucks could be bought in fall 1981, I have a 6.2 red block in my garage with a cast date of 10/81. Also I have a 1992 6.5 5-speed truck with a build date of 11/91 according to the door tag so i'm pretty sure they were available then as well. I know of quite a few 1992 model year 6.5 trucks. Just my findings anyway.

I'd be willing to bet the red block engines began to be cast well before October of '81. Gramps truck was already on the lot in early Oct.
1992 6.5L diesels in the T400 CK chassis were Normally Aspirated engines. If they had a turbo it was a dealer installed and warranted ATS or Banks or... The Turbodiesel wasn't a factory option till Model Year '93.

I don't mean to argue but I literally have a 1992 model year 6.5 truck that is factory turbo charged. It's not a banks setup, it even has a 1991 casting date on the turbo manifold and is just like all factory turbo trucks and I know it's factory for a fact. I don't know what to tell you but even on my diesel forum there are a few guys with factory 1992 6.5 turbo trucks. You could still get an N/A version but the 6.5T was available.

I purposely didn't buy one till the '93 MY trucks were available for order because a Factory TD wasn't available. It was My first new vehicle purchase and the only one I ever special ordered so my recollection is pretty good on the details. Might've been a Northeastern region availability thing... or my dealer was just full of it.
Installing the 93 manifolds, turbo, and exhaust on a 92 in the last 20+ years wouldn't be a big trick either.

Yeah who knows really, all I know is mine is legit for sure. It even has the 6.5 diesel turbo decal on the hood. I also know someone with a 92 6.2 K2500 with a 4L80E so I know you had some options then.

Get me a VIN. I'll run it and tell you if it's factory.

We load all kinds of trucks at my place of employment. Semi trucks, pick ups, flat beds 70's to 2015's all kinds you name it. We get squarebodys often. Me being a squarebody nut, I pay close attention when one rolls in. There is this old man who drives a 81 Silverado long bed. I noticed it had diesel emblems, but has a gas engine in it. The gentleman told me he has owned the truck since 1984 and swapped the 5.7 olds diesel for a 5.7 olds gas. He even said he has the 5.7 olds diesel sitting in a shed at his house. When the nice man comes back, I will snap a few pics.

Re: A rare cl find

There is a 90 Suburban R2500 in a salvage yard near me that has a Banks turbo system on it. it was on there for quite awhile before parts started to get scavenged. It still had the banks boost gauge inside, a couple other gauges, wiring, etc. Under the hood it was a complete system. I read it was designed to produce 75 HP on the 6.2 diesels. I thought about grabbing it all since it was odd but never did. Had some cool Banks fender emblems too!

That Banks system probably would've been a moderate money maker on FleaBay. Even the major parts like exhaust manifolds and intake tubing are still worth money. If it's still there and reasonably complete I'd grab it all and re-sell it to further finance your hobby...
