Accelerate and dies

I have this 49 with a 216, just replaced the fuel tank, lines, filter and a bunch of other stuff. It seems to idle great, but as soon as I touch the gas pedal it will die. When I first start it and have the choke all the way open I can hit the pedal no problem, but once the choke is off no dice. Any ideas? Accelerator plunger maybe? Carb was new a few years ago and truck hasn't been driven in 15-20yrs. It's been sitting in my in laws garage.

Re: Accelerate and dies

Yes, when I ran the 1bbl carbs, or even 2gc 2 bbls I carried a spare accelerator pump. Seems they failed about every 5 years, even more if it sits and they dry out.

Re: Accelerate and dies

Either a carb or leak. My leak was at my gas tank and I tightened down the fitting near the sending unit and it ran great

Easy to check, pull air cleaner and look down throat. Move throttle and you get s squirt or gss if its good, little or none if bad.

Re: Accelerate and dies

Hitting the throttle and having it die or falter and pick up and go is normally accelerator pump related. Having to keep the choke on part way to keep it running is vacuum leak related.
