Hi all,
I have a 64 with a 71 front crossmember and the 71 engine perches. The engine is in the forward set of holes on the frame rails. I want to use a stock 66 shroud if I can. The measurement between the stub of the short water pump and the radiator is 5 inches. think it will fit?

How deep is a stock shroud from where it meets the face of the radiator to its most narrow part of the opening closest to the engine?

A stock shroud measures 6-7/8". The fan will be too far into the shroud to properly move air and I don't know of there is enough depth of the lip to trim it back and have it work properly. It will somewhat depend on the fan you use. This is one of the things I warn people about when they want to move their engine forward.

I looking to do the same thing. Out junk yard has tons of shrouds down there. Anyone know of a shroud I could make work?

What's the benefit of moving an engine forward? I can see it if you're installing a big block, because you don't really have any choice. But they came with a small block, and it was installed in a spot that uses factory components--like a fan shroud.

Not only that, but moving the engine forward hurts handling. It's not like these things handle great to begin with, but moving the engine forward just makes it worse.

So what's the thinking with moving it forward?

I think most that do it, do so because they think that the HEI distributor is too close to the firewall. I have never had a issue with that and typically say so when someone asks about it. Some even compound the moving the engine forward issues by going with a long water pump too.

my stock shroud is in front of the radiator. i went with the electric fan.

Weird. I've got an HEI on my '62 Suburban, and there's no problem with clearance at all.

I know a mid 60's Impala fan shroud is used a lot during swaps. Check the opening and clearance of fan space like Captain Fab mentioned.
