grinder stand
I have seen a number of grinder type stands built from 22.5" truck rims. I also looked at Harbor Freight ones, and the grinder stand at work. These "pro built" units has considerably less foot print than the truck rim.
I have 4 stock '70 six lug drum type 15" steel rims in the garage. Do you guys think these would make a suitable base?

Re: grinder stand
A friend had a grinder with a rim as it's base and i remember kicking the rim many times during use. I think it's a very good base and just a matter of getting used to it.
I had the idea years ago of using say a 13" rim and filling the underside with concrete for additional ballast! I purchased a used baldor brand grinder and it had a baldor cast base. The base is square and i still have kicked it a few times, but it's rare. |

Re: grinder stand
Better look close at the rims first, to see if they are 3 nub or 4 nub.
If 4 you can sell them for a nice chunk of change and buy a grinder and pedestal. Jim |

Re: grinder stand
Get used big rig brake drums. They are smaller diameter than the wheels and weight about double.

Re: grinder stand
Big rims would be nice, but I have these. If this does not work, I'll always wish it had.
On with the show, that doesn't really have much of a show... The finished product. Nothing complicated, rim, 3/8" plate, 2X2-1/4" tube, Vice that has been mounted to another 3/8" plate and a receiver adapter tube welded to the bottom. The real complication was adding 3" of 2x2 to what other 2x2 tube that was not quite long enough. After welding that, I used the oldest trick in a welder pocket, grinder and paint! My goal was to have the vise base even with the weld table. I missed by 3/8". OK, so which idiot forgot about the 3/8" plate at the top? Good help is hard to find. I blame the guy in the last pic. He was too busy doing something or other. I still have to drill the cross bolt hole. That can wait a few days, i doubt the vise will jump up 3 inches to escape.

Re: grinder stand
I also picked up this from TSC. Clearanced for $30! Easy to put together, real easy. The lasers did need some adjustment, again real easy. At least it's a start.

Re: grinder stand
I missed that opportunity about 7 years ago. The tech school was ditching a semi wheel stand. It was nice but it was "home made" so the school could no longer use it. Wierd. A school that is teaching welding, machining and fabricating could not use fabricated stuff. Lawyers Sheeesh! Spied it before class, it was gone after class. Missed it by that much.

Re: grinder stand
I'll have to build my own grinder base too but it needs to be on wheels
