Dana 44 carrier

carrier break is 3.73 and 3.92. (3.92's in there now) so what carrier to use? 3.73 and down and it will be an open carrier right? will my spider and side gears fit? does my 61 have 19 or 30 spline axles on the carrier side? forgot to count when i had the axles out for u-joints. all this becouse of rear eaton with 3.38's.

just a used carrier will be fine as long as my spiders and side gears will fit. thanks in adv.

Sometimes it takes more than 4 hrs to get an answer. Patience Grasshopper . I think this is the best place for your answer. I'm a bit confused, can't really answer right without clarification. Wouldn't want to steer you wrong. What exactly are you needing to know and wanting to do? By "down" do you mean lower ratio or lower gears (higher ratio). You can get a traction aid device for any carrier/any ratio. What ratio are you wanting to end up with? What are you saying about the 3.38s?

Re: Dana 44 carrier

All normal (non jeep jk)d44 side gears will be 30 spline and fit your chevy carrier. 373and numerically lower go on the 373 and down case. 392 and numerically higher go on the 392 case.

Re: Dana 44 carrier

thanks obijun. I have a 3.92 case and will need a 3.73 case for my new 3.31 r&p and my spider and axle gears will fit.

Re: Dana 44 carrier

Late to the game, but I have a factory d44 rear in my '61 Suburban, with 30-spline axles, and I bought a Jeep take-out posi carrier and loaded 3.42 gears on it.
I'm about to start a '62 4x4 long-step project, and plan to put 3.42 or so gears in it, with posi units in both ends. I'll do some light off-roading, but it's mainly going to be my daily driver and will use it on a couple construction sites and for hunting. With the lock-out hubs, I don't see posi being a problem in the front for around-town driving.

Re: Dana 44 carrier

Here's a 30-spline 3.73 posi for $174.

(not mine)
Check any local Jeep or off-road shops that do installations, as a lot of Jeep guys want want steeper gears and get rid of the 3.73-and numerically lower units.

Hmmm, how 'bout I bring the car carrier up and take that headache off your hands for you? Lol, just kidding!
Do you live anywhere Marysville? Reason I ask is that there is a guy there who always has stuff on CL for our trucks. You can see his place from the road (hwy 20 I think) on the way to Collins Lake. He is always selling the 1/2 ton (ho 52?) and HO 72 axles, frames etc. For some reason, no sheetmetal but lots of drivetrain parts. Might be worth a look?

Re: Dana 44 carrier

Just re read your post. Im a dope. You're only looking for a good Dana 44 carrier right? There's a place in San Jose called Rear End Specialties that has stocked good used carriers when I've swapped gears in the past. The price was right when they were installing a gear set. They may be worth calling. Also, my kid brother has a shop in Loomis as well. He has a truck wrecker right next door that he is pretty tight with. I could ask him to give a call if you like.
