Do I need new spindles?? Pics inside
Hi all,
Have a wobble in right front wheel. Went to replace the hub/disk but before I took it off I noticed the hub/disk assembly wobbled while I rotated it with no play in it. I took it off and this is the condition of the spindle On the top of the spindle at the back (near the dust shield) it feels like a little groove/bump has been made as the bottom of the spindle is smooth. Do I need to replace this?? Thanks |

If it were mine I'd most likely run them. The seal does not ride that close to the shoulder so it should never be riding over that depression. That being said if it was on a truck I was restoring/showing or racing, yes I would be changing it out just for my own piece of mind and also I am anal that way. On a daily driver I'd run it as is.
what I'd be concerned more with is all that metal powder on the shield. since we don't get to see the hub/rotor I guess you are aware of whats causing that.

I can't see anything obviously wrong with the spindle where the bearings ride looks to be ok and I assume the seal contact area of the spindle has no groove. If the rotor was wobbling and had no play in it you may have a different problem.

Re: Do I need new spindles?? Pics inside
Thanks for the replies guys,
Looks like I had an out of round rotor on the drivers side. When I spun the rotor it would rise up and down if you focused on the top. I went ahead and put everything together with new rotors and pads, cleaned and re-greased timken bearings, put back on and it spun like a champ. It appears this was my wobble problem. This I had been chasing this wobble down for a while. |

It appears something wore into the spindle shaft. Wear = fine metal pieces. Once that gets to the bearing, they wear. I would replace the bearings & not just clean/re-pack them.
