250, no oil pressure - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Started the 250 after sitting for 4+ years and it ran great. Drove it down the street and it began to sputter and then backfired. Pulled it back to the garage and found the distributor was loose. Set the timing position as it always was pointing and the truck started right away. BUT, now there's no oil pressure.

Pulled the distributor and the tongue on the end of the shaft is still intact. Installed another oil pressure gauge, no pressure.
Started and idles great.

Did something to the oil pump?
Dropped the pickup tube?

Have you tried using a priming tool to spin the pump ?

ohh i think its time to drop the oil pan .. that sounds like pump failure or at the least a pump pickup tube has fallen off the oil pump . at any rate i would not run the engine untill that is fixed as you will eat up your crank and rod bearings in short time ... also just try to put in a aftermarket oil gauge to see if its the gauge but i doubt it .. im thinking its pump related

No, I did not try a priming tool as suggested. Time to make one.

Tried two other pressure gauges without success.

priming the pump helps ..

also cheque the clearance of the pickup to the oil pan ... it might need to be adjusted
