1972 c10 rare option? build thread
Well here goes my first build thread.
The title is just for laughs because upon picking up the truck me and my father were laughing at the rare option wv boat dock wooden bed..lol it was a long ride home. Not to make to much fun because we both used to live in wv and he still works in the state. Now time for the goodies picked up this truck for 1800 and drove it up on the trailer good solid running 355 with decent cam. Once home i replaced the busted brake line (reason the po was selling the truck) and put new calipers pads and rotors on the front along with new inner and outer wheelbearing and seals. And she runs like. Champ I've put probably close to 3k miles on it in the last 4 months |

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
First thing first was to get a bed for the truck.
After looking at the spid this truck came factory with step but I love the look of the fleet so I called up lmc and ordered 2 new bed sides Plain tail gate and inner fenders. Dad had a brand new bulkhead from a previous build and I'm going with wood Floor so didn't have to order a bed floor. Found some 15x10s on CL for cheap and put a set of Cobra radials on it and loved the way it looks even with the wood bed |

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
It was like Christmas when the bed parts started rolling in.
Me and dad built the cross seals from some metal I pulled out of the pasture at my grandparents house lol |

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
The material used to make the cross seals are almost identical
To the originals but they weren't quite long enough. Had to cut them to length and butt weld them together. Drilled the appropriate Holes and they ended up working out. So saved some change there. All I needed was a rear cross sill for a wooden bed...couldn't find one locally and things were starting to get tight with the budget so I didn't krder one from lmc. But local 67-72 parts giy I know had a good cross sill for steel floor. Spent about 3 hours laying in the mud trying to pull it from the donor truck. I'll upload more pics of how we converted a rear cross sill from a steel bed to fit a wooden bed |

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
Ok so only have one good pic of the rear cross sill. So try and stay with me. The only difference in cross seals is that one for a wooden bed has a 3/4 inch notch in it because the wood floor sets on it and steel floor is tack welded to the top of it. Me and dad took 1 inch angle iron and welded it inside the cross seal and then cut out the rest of the notch. That is what it looks like now. I only needed 3/4 of a inch notch but 1 inch angle was all we had laying around so now I have a 1 inch deep notch in the rear cross seal. As for now I'm just using treated plywood for a bed floor until I get some more $$ saved up

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
Since putting the bed on I have replaced a tie rod end and ordered a new sending unit and in cab fuel tank. Old tank was rusted pretty bad and kept having to change fuel filters cause it would run like $h*t so now I have new send unit and tank installed. and next thing on the list is to do something with the interior. And also replace the rear main. It's starting to leak more than i think it should lol.

Coming along nicely..liked the wood bed too!
Is it wrong that I don't have the blue/purple pieces on the dash?

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
The glove box and ash tray is almost a plum crazy purple. And while the color isn't for me I will give props to whomever painted it because they do look damn good. And the wood is just plywood for now. Also forgot to mention the truck I took the rear cross sill from also donated the tail lights, marker lights and back lights and all all the housings lol.

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
Well things have Ben busy with work but still progressing slowly.
Done some.interior work but nothing much to report. But here is where the fun begins. After contemplating on what I want to do with the truck and where I would like to see it when done and the direction that I want to go I finally decided to take the big step. Going ls!! I'll have pics up soon! |

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
So with me heading back out for work. I havnt had much time to think and or work on the truck. What I did do is fairly simple and will save me some $$ on engine mounts for the ls I found this pic on here and had some free time so I decided what the hell I'll make my own adapter plates. Also snagged a sbc engine mount to confirm that these are the right dimensions. I'll be transferring it to metal soon and using a drill press we have handy and I'll have my conversion mounts made!

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
Also on side note I found a local tuner to reprogram my pcm. I sent it off before leaving for work and the guy is cool as hell. Anyone in OH KY or WV look up blue cat tuning. They do alot of import based stuff but also have there hands in the ls world. I will be having these guys tune my truck once I get it together since they have a in house dyno as well

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
Gonna go back in time a lil bit after digging around and finding some pictures. Couple months back I finally got my ol man to get his k5 together enough to drive it to a local cruise in. BTW the handsome fellow in the corvette shirt is me and the guy in the chevy hat is my dad. Proud to say I've learned everything I know from him and he has provided me with the addiction of these old trucks! His blazer has ben a on going project for the last 3 years. Also this was the first cruise in that either of our trucks had seen and we both ended up walking away with door prizes!

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
Lol yeah we have poked fun at the truck for that since I bought it. But looking back now I'm glad it had that ol wooden bed. I think it's another reason the PO was selling the truck because he was to overwelmed to try and find a bed or to buy the pieces to build one. And trust me it wasn't cheap by no means.

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
A good friend has been helping his son (now 27 years old) work on a 67. Son bought it w/ some money he got when grandma passed away, Jr. was in the 8th grade at the time.
Was a LWB, Dad promised Jr he'd help him realize a dream of completing the project. They did. Dad is a VERY skilled guy, he shortened the frame. Jr. found a bed in pretty good condition, was happy to pay $600.00 for a complete short bed. It did obviously need a lot of body work, but looks good now |

Re: 1972 c10 rare option? build thread
If I could do it all over again I would try and find a gm bed instead if buying the Chinese metal. The reason I went with new was because I am no body man. Oh well lesson learned. I've got pics of me and my dad in a 67 4x4 shortbed with 40 inch super swamps when I was little. And I'm sure that's where this love of these trucks started. This is my second 67-72 my first was a 2wd long bed 68 in high school and the truck looked damn good from about 200 ft away lol. I blew it up hot rodding and didnt have the money to fix it. I'm 23 now and recently married and don't have the time id like (or the money) to work on the truck as much as I want. We're trying to save for a place of our own but It will get there one day!
