Replacing HEI Coil and Module

My HEI module burned out and wanted to get a poll on performance manufacturer preference. I have been looking and doing research. I want a solid performance ignition that will take abuse and last a while. If you don't mind, what are your favorite brands and models for the job? Thanks for your help.

Re: Replacing HEI Coil and Module

Accel would be my choice, but I'm probably pulling my HEI for something smaller and Pertronix if I can't figure out my interference issues.

Re: Replacing HEI Coil and Module

with DUI every distributor is custom made. you fill out this form and input your engine parameters and they build your distributor. plus their spark plug wires are amazing 10mm with a nice sheathing. very good quality.

I'm running the HYPERTECH HEI super coil, truck runs great with it, this replaced the ACCEL coil which is lower rated

SMP/Blue Streak (Standard Motor Products). And just because I own stock. Been using their products for decades.

Re: Replacing HEI Coil and Module

If it's a cruiser I would go with an msd. If it's a serious truck I would choose msd or dui. Cheaps not good and goods not cheap.

Re: Replacing HEI Coil and Module

Just remember even the big name brands like MSD have junk they offer. Like the MSD "Streetfire" series of products. I've been using MSD and Mallory products since the 80's. But now I use MSD exclusively. Goes back to my drag racing roots.

Re: Replacing HEI Coil and Module

years back there was a comprehensive article in one of the trade magazines. it went in depth explaining why so many hei modules were short lived. cutting to the chase delco was the only manufacture that used this exotic, expensive heat sink paste (internal to the module).

SO the moral to that story is if you have hei and use an aftermarket module then do like most people here do - carry a spare.

Re: Replacing HEI Coil and Module

I've always used "heat sink" paste and not dielectric grease on my modules. Only had one go bad in 25 years of using HEI's.

Re: Replacing HEI Coil and Module

Same here. Think you and I discussed this before Gary. Arctic Silver computer CPU paste. "Dielectric" is defined as a non-conducting substance.

Re: Replacing HEI Coil and Module

I believe we have. I have a tube of the "heat sink" schmutz that I have labeled "HEI grease" in my tool box.

"Other" Factory GM module wasn't listed.
