can i see your exhuast?

I've been doing some work on a 1991 k1500, i want to do headers and some decent exhaust. its just a stock tbi 350. i'm not sure if i want short length or mid length headers, and weather i want to do true duals, a single 3" or a y pipe. it would be really helpful if i could see how some of you guys did your exhaust so i could get an idea of what i want.

What about government rules in your area?

Here we can't change the location of the cats and your factory muffler has to be followed with a replacement. For example dual in and dual out of a single unit. Then the replacement has to be D/D.

Re: can i see your exhuast?

I put a set of shorty's on with a longer Y-pipe that basically turns them in to long tubes. But it was a stock TBI350 with 175k, and after the headers, since already had a single in/dual out system I replaced the cat with 3" straight pipe. I couldnt' believe the torque it had, and made it louder as well. No cat probly helped with that....

Re: can i see your exhuast?

I have a dual outlet muffler for now, with pipes run out behind both tires. In Maryland that will pass the one-time safety inspection required to register. Beyond that, as long as it passes emissions and has a cat or cats visible. So, I can run true duals as long as I have two cats. Mine's a Suburban, so I can run exhaust down both side just like I always have on older trucks. I put historic tags on to buy time for inspecting. I should go ahead and inspect so I can do headers and true duals. My cat is getting funky and I don't want to have to replace it where it is

Up here in Alberta there are no regulations.. You just need a muffler. So my options are wide!. I'm
Forsure going to run magnaflow cat/cats. But I can do true dual or a single..I'm just wondering how you guys are routing it more than anything

Re: can i see your exhuast?

My year has 2 cats. The two pipes run into a true dual in dual out cherry bomb then into resonators (can't remember which is first resonators or cherry) then split out the rear on either side of receiver hitch.

My cats have been gutted for years since here they don't do a tailpipe test. Had the rear O2s programmed out at the same time I got rid of EGR.

Re: can i see your exhuast?

On my 95 350 I have Edelbrock shorty headers, a Magnaflow Y/converter pipe, and a Gibson cat back single. It's all stainless and has been on there for 8+ years with only some minor adjustments needed. I love the sound and the added power I get out of it.

Re: can i see your exhuast?

on a stock 350tbi a single 3" pipe is plenty. you'll never get enough out of the tbi to outflow that exhaust. the gains between a mid tube and shorty header are negligible also, go with what fits your budget. i would do headers, 2.5" pipe, y'd together after the the transfer case with a flowmaster merge, then 3" pipe to a muffler of your choice, and tailpipe over the axle to finish it off.

i know these tbis are not producing huge power or anything, im not looking for the best flow or anything, its a old 350, i dont need long tubes with dual 3" or anything. im just looking for a little better flow, clean look, and nice sound. what would be the advantage of having the y pipe behind the transfercase vs. where the factory one is?

Re: can i see your exhuast?

the factory y-pipe is very restrictive. it's made that way to create heat for the non-heated o2 sensor. moving the merge farther back means the exhaust has farther to go before it has to make a sharp turn. this keeps the velocity up and helps with scavenging. a heated o2 sensor is a must with headers and a free flowing exhaust. as far as sound. pick your flavor on youtube. listen to videos and see what trips your trigger.

My exhaust is private, but I'll try to shoot a selfie if it makes your day. Kinda curious about it myself since I've never seen it. I know it's there, though, 'cause it makes thunder from time to time.
