removing manifolds

So... do you have to remove the spark plug shields to get the manifolds out? I saw no gaskets on the block...is that normal? Thanks, Al

Gaskets were not used from the factory. What year make model and emissions components are there? Maybe post a pic of the manifolds on the truck. We won't be able to help until we know exactly what you are working on.

My truck is a 1978 C10 Custom Deluxe 305 engine, Thank you, Al

Emissions, there is a small rod that hooks up to the heat riser then a small hose to another thing by the air breather. Thanks, Al

The spark plug heat shields are held in by the manifold bolts. When you take the bolts out, the heat shield will come right out.

I took all the bolts out of the manifold but the sparkplug shields appear to be bolted or screwed in underneath. They are in the way of pulling the manifold up and out because of the shields and the frame. Thanks, Al

Spark plug shields are bolted to the block along the top edge. There are two bolts on each side of the block. Try a 7/16 or possibly a 3/8 wrench.

Hmmmm. I did a tune up on a 78 a few weeks ago that had them held in with the manifold bolts. Maybe someone put newer manifolds on it.

There are two styles of spark plug heat shield for the small block Chevy. Both styles are held on with a single bolt. Check out these pix:

Those are ram horns. they didn't come on 79s

This is the style that would be on a 79. You cant see the bolts for the heat shield.



And this is the kind of manifold that was on a 79 I worked on a few weeks ago. The ones on the truck did not have an EGR tube. My guess is they are off a tbi truck. You can see the heat shield is held on with the manifold bolts.

Mine is like S Tuckers pic. You can't see where the Sparkplug shields are bolted on, I would guess underneath somewhere? Al

I used to just yank the manifold out and let the heat shields bend a little. Make sure the spark plugs are removed first. On a 4x4 the heat shields could probably be removed from the bottom, not so easy on a C10.
