Re: dipstick horror stories
If you use the newer style dip stick tube it has a rubber bushing you put in the trans and the stick pushes into it. It is available most anywhere where parts are sold. Aftermarket ones sometimes do not have the top ear welded on I would stay away from these. I would go to Chevrolet or a trans shop or even a used one should work. I think I even used one from a 700R4 trans with the locking dipstick. Summit also sells a Huges one which is very nice but about $30.00.

Re: dipstick horror stories
When I was younger in the army I had a 78 C10 with an eternal trans leak. Replaced the pan gasket 3 times. Still leaked. So bad in fact that on leave I came back and lost 4 qts of fluid. Before I sold it I found out the trans (th350) dipstick tube was cracked at the base and was leaking down onto the gasket/pan. I pulled it and it had no rubber O-ring either. If only I had found this out years prior. Just rambling

Re: dipstick horror stories
A little different from what you are asking for, but I use a Lokar flexible dipstick/ tube. It locks into the transmission (you have to pull the pan to install), doesn't leak, and gives you flexibility to put the dipstick in a non stock location. Works great for me.
