Bulkhead, Grommet, Chassis harness, SOUND OFF ???
What are you guys running for wires through the firewall? Bulkhead connectors, Grommets, Chassis harness??? Where are you running the wires (eg. left firewall under inner fender well)? Painless, AAW, Etc? Pictures of the firewall penetration - Bulkhead connectors, Grommets, Chassis harness??? ?

ez 21 circuit, search for "ez wire" in box above and previous threads on best wiring kits will show up. I mounted my fuse panel left of steering column. I ran the wiring out the fire wall into the fender panel, then to the frame. Three circuits; back, engine and front. Used one large grommet and filled with flexible butyl putty used in home applications. Seals but stays flexible.

I think I still have the fuse block cover for my 48 that I had chromed in 1973 and the plan now is to modify the old fuse block to hold the cover while serving to hide where the wires go through the firewall. My original plan was to have a bulkhead connector behind the cover. The firewall grommets that crossfire84 showed are pretty interesting in that they could fit behind the cover. I'm not going to hide my wiring as my truck will be a ''traditional" build where having the wring exposed isn't verboten as it seems to be on a slick mod rod build. I will however bust my butt to have the wiring as neat and detailed as Orrie or the others who pay serious attention to detail have on theirs. There is no deadline on this build and hopefully there will be no cut corners this go around.

I ended up just mounting my Ron Francis setup under the drivers seat and running wires under the floor into the chassis rails. I haven't made the holes for my pressure and temp gauges yet though so am glad you asked the question.

I like to use the factory style bulkhead connectors whenever possible. Below is a 66 C10 I did using a well-engineered American Autowire Classic Update kit. In addition to the basic stuff like ignition (HEI or conventional), starter, alternator, and lights, it has wires for electric choke, water temp and oil pressure senders, and even fan controller, as I recall. And it uses 8 gauge wires to the ignition switch and for the charging circuits. Factory was 10 gauge, or maybe even 12 gauge.

This thread was on my mind today as I looked at the cars at a show. Lots of nice wiring, some not so good. One guy had a TF truck converted to automatic and used the old clutch hole with a grommet, low on the fire wall relatively out of site, comes out close to the frame for routing to front and back.

If you're not using the vents, all of the wiring can be routed up to the dash and down to the frame on both sides by using a hole saw and cutting a hole in front of the cab mount into the cavity where the cowl vents drain. This keeps the firewall and inner fenders completely clean of wire and looms. This also necessitates using a custom solid cowl vent like in the vent thread here but it sure keeps the engine bay/firewall clean.

I think I got my grommets from BowTie Bits but most all of the vendors have them. Restoration Specialties also has a good selection of rubber parts. I didn't try to hide my wiring so I used the original holes ran my wiring pretty much like it was originally. I used an EZ Wire 21 harness which I'm very satisfied with.

I like Speedbumpautos suggestion above, I think I may do it his way to avoid wiring on the firewall. I saw this at a car show a couple of seeks ago and though it looked cool. He used a boat vent.
You can find them on eBay by searching for "stainless boat vent". |
