Dana 60 Posi - Not being Posi

My Dana 60 posi is only applying power to the right tire. I bought this truck back after regretfully selling it 10 years ago. It was posi when it was sold and the previous owner assures me he didn't change anything, and I believe him. I pulled the left axle and all the splines look good. I have no idea what else to check. What do you think has broken.

Is repair for that going to be really expensive?

The spool is really the only thing it could be. If the axle was broken it would fall out.
New spools are $400-$600. I personally would change the inner races and the bearings. If you get a shop to do the labor, could be a couple hundred more.

Clutches are most likely excessively worn. Watch Toms differentials you tube video on rebuilding and tuning. He also is a great resource and parts supplier. Good luck

Make sure it is a true posi rear end first. Jack the rear up and spin one tire by hand and see if the other tire rotates in the same direction.

Re: Dana 60 Posi - Not being Posi

Most likely you have a TracLock and not a PowerLock or the Maximum Traction (Detroit) difff, but it could be any of the above. What does the SPID say?

Next, if it's 10 years since you last owned the truck, most likely the diff fluid could use a once a decade change. Pull cover. Take picture. Post picture in this thread. Then we can ID what your diff is and what you need to do.

Money has a TrackLock with worn clutches but will hold final judgement until we see pics.

Yes, That's what we have all mostly said. But to know for sure we have to know what it is. TrackLock=probably worn out. PowerLock maybe not... Maximum Traction diff then it's broken.

You will need to pull the diff cover and determine which center section you have. I'm betting it's a TruTrac and, if so, it is easily rebuildable. A clutch kit for it is available from Drivetrain Specialists for between $92.00 and $128.00 depending on which one you have. That's cheap considering a new one goes for $680.00.
