Stereo for original dash mount - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

New to the board here. Just bought a '71 Cheyenne, and it looks to be a fun project getting it up and going.

My son want to replace the original AM (only) radio with a new FM/AM setup, about 100 watts/channel or so.

Can ya'll recommend "where to look" for a reasonably priced radio ($100 - $200) that mounts in the original radio dash cutout? I don't want to modify the dash at all, but something better than AM would be nice.

I have a JVC that fits in the original cutout. It's a high power unit ( 23wx4ch ) plenty loud. Welcome to the board.

I have the same model Paul has listed above, and it is the way to go IMO, looks like original, fits well, and sounds great.

i'll follow krue w/ a second welcome from mississippi. if you're just gonna get rid of the am radio, let me know if you want anything for it. i've got one that doesn't seem to be working and would love to have another one to replace it.

I would suggest Custom Auto Sound.

They have some of the best design that I have seen if you are looking for the original look. I also have a buddy that is a dealer for these guys if you find something that you like.

Thanks for the warm welcome folks. My son and I live in Starkville, MS, home of the MSU Bulldogs. My son just turned 15 and is itchin for "own truck", and I guess this one will be it (once he mows enough grass to help pay for it). Super way to learn how "all these parts fit together". This particular truck wasn't actually for sale. We saw it parked out back of a one-man shop, and the owner already had a 67 Ranchero and a 68 Chevelle being restored. We asked, and he sold!

The body had been partially restored and primed a few years back, engine modified with an Edelbrock intake and headers, and a Holley carb. Also has the HEI and internal regulated alternator, but just about everything else looks orginal (and worn of course).

After new tires, shocks, brakes, and good 'ole Mississippi "straight pipes", what amazes me is this truck Really Moves!! Engine seems is good shape at least. I flushed and filtered the 3-speed auto transmission, replaced the rear-end gear oil. Only major work to get it road-ready is getting some slack out of the steering column (seems some bearings might be worn a bit).

Then it on to "re-wiring". We do have a few "ghosts in the attic" with some hobbled together "trailor light hookup" wrapped in duct tape. Right now we mostly just drive in the daylight!

I was not necessarily looking for a new hobby, but this one might be more interesting than building military rifles (another $$ consuming game I started a few years back). I just hope it's not as "addictive"!

jmj4: We probably won't be using the old radio, and I'm not even sure it works. The truck came without an antennae and the original radio was "unplugged" at the fuse block. I'd be willing to "swap" for an antenae! Maybe between the two radios you can get one working anyway. Email me if interested (or propose something else I'll probably need.)

If ya'll have any good suggestions for "Major Things I Should Look For" safety wise, please let me know. I've never owned any vehicle this old before . . . and I imagine that anything could surprise me. (BTW - I'm going to install the 3-point safety belts - and maybe a get-out-of-jail-free-card, before turning my son loose with this monster. Sometimes it's scary having a teenager - and I think he may have watched too much of the Dukes of Hazard shows.)

Here is the setup I use. Kenwood.. You can still get it from Crutchfield.
Great system and has RCA outputs if you want to hurt your ears. I think the spec's are 45 watts standard. The c/d is a 10 disc changer that connects by cable, not the f/m.. No dash cutting. Ive had this system in several trucks and love it!
