about to receive a 1963 Fleetside Longbed

Hey Guys,

I have a buddy that is giving me his old truck with the 292 and three on the tree. It's been sitting for 12 years but was painted a few years prior to parking it under a tree where it sits today. There is not much rust at all and but the wood in the bed is pretty much gone. Surface rust in the engine bay and on the frame. Here in the PNW it rains a lot but no salt on the roads so no real bad rust.

My question is, what are the best the places to shop for parts and I would really prefer a short bed, can this be modified at a reasonable cost?

Thanks Guys!

pics to come

Mar-K is my choice for bed wood and bed parts. Made in the USA and no fitment issues.

Re: about to receive a 1963 Fleetside Longbed

Welcome! I too am in the Pacific NW working on a long-bed. I'd keep the long bed if it fits. That said, people here have successfully chopped the frame and the bed and sewn it back together to make a short bed.

Re: about to receive a 1963 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks for the warm welcome! Maybe I will keep it in its current form. Not looking to make a show truck but how much do you estimate for a frame off moderate restoration? I am budgeting 10K. Macco paint job, I can paint the frame. I figure the engine needs to be rebuilt since it has sat for 12 plus years. I would assume 3k for that. maybe a transmission rebuild, 2k for that. I would like to take it from the tree to the floor but not a requirement. rewire, looks like I can get a full kit for 500 bucks. The truck seems pretty simplistic to tear down and rebuild.

Re: about to receive a 1963 Fleetside Longbed

10k seems realistic if you're not needing much body work, and are okay with a Macco paint job. I'm probably 12k into mine and haven't touched body or paint, but I'm also doing a lot of stuff above and beyond just getting it back on the road.

That said, if your current plans account for 10k, figure by the time you're done you'll spend 20 . Too easy to add stuff as you go. "Man while the body is off I should really get a rear-fuel tank," or "well if I'm doing the brakes anyways I'll just swap it to discs."

Scope creep!

Welcome to the forum! Add a 5 speed behind that 292 and you'll have a great cruiser! And to agree:

Judging by the number of posts that appear on this site inquiring about LB to SB conversions, do you see that happening anytime soon?

Re: about to receive a 1963 Fleetside Longbed

LOL... Funny Topic... I was the same way.. When I got back from overseas my Grandfather gave his 64 short bed step.. I loved that truck.. the 8th biggest mistake in my life was selling it years later..
I Never liked long beds or fleet sides..
Today I own a long bed fleet side........ The more I drove it the more I liked it..

It's a lot of labor so if you can do it yourself you can do it cheap. if you have to hire it out it's gonna be expensive.

yikes, I not sure I would want to tackle that on my own. Looks like I may be leaving it a long bed.
