Truck cuts off when we put it in reverse or drive

I just bought my son a '77 C20 with the 292 straight 6. We put new plugs, wires, pcv valve, and rebuilt the carb. It will start and idle now, but when we put it in reverse or drive it cuts off.The carb is the Rochester monojet me #17057008. This carb has an electric choke and throttle solenoid. Both have male electrical connectors that have no wires going to them. I am thinking I could run a wire from either the starter or the ignition coil hot side to these connectors, but am not sure? Can someone help me out here?

First thought I had was the neutral safety switch is wired to the ignition circuit rather then the start circuit.

The choke is easy to wire.
You need an ignition hot lead to the choke coil and the other terminal grounds.
The throttle solenoid is either an anti dieseling solenoid or an idle speed solenoid. To find out which apply 12 volts to it and see which way it moves. If the solenoid plunger moves away from the throttle arm it is an anti dieseling solenoid. If it moves towards the throttle arm is idle speed related. Now if it is what I think it is an anti dieseling solenoid than you would use another ignition hot lead to it. You can use the same lead that the choke would use. Also if it is an anti dieseling solenoid to adjust it, with the key off it should contact and hold open the throttle lever about a 1/8 inch off full closed. If it is idle speed related they were generally for A/C and you would use a compressor feed to wire to the solenoid. It was designed to step up the idle approx. 200 RPM when the A/C was engaged to maintain a good idle quality.
the dying in gear is most likely a tune problem possibly the idle is too low, or the idle mixture is too lean, or the timing is off, or a vacuum leak.

Agree with above. Also, putting the vacuum advance on the distributor to manifold vacuum instead of ported vacuum would help keep the timing advanced at idle.

I believe it is an anti dieseling solenoid, but will get it wired up to make sure. This truck has no A/c. I think I need to invest in a timing light. I;m just not sure why this thing would even have an electric choke since there is a manual choke with cable installed in the dash and it looks factory???
