250 to 350 swap questions

I just picked up a 80 short stepper this weekend, and it has a 4.1 straight 6 in it, with a th350. It has the integrated head, and the manifold is cracked. I guess this is a common problem with this set up. It came with another 4.1 that is good, but I was thinking that if it is a pretty straight forward swap, I would just put a 350 in it. So, what would I have to round up to swap in a 350? Thanks guys. This is going to kill me, I bought this truck this weekend, and tore down my garage to build a new one last week!!!! This truck is going to be an easy project, but I wont have the new garage up for at least 2 months!!!!!

Depends on the 350 you get if its a crate Eng. you will need a lot. I just swapped one no emission stuff no A/C don't forget to move the motor mounts to lower holes before get Eng. in. good news flex plate tran. and starter all bolt right up. If it has to meet emission's good luck.

Re: 250 to 350 swap questions

I swapped the 250 for a 350 in my stepside late last year. Here are few things I remember I HAD to get:
Motor mount perches (I think that's right?), they bolt your engine to the motor mounts.
fan clutch assembly(I6 unit looked to wimpy)
fan shroud(my I6 didn't use one, it used a fan guard/hold down)
SBC radiator hold down(see above)
SBC radiator(wimpy like the fan clutch)
SBC upper/lower radiator hoses
air cleaner housing
plug/wireset
new exhaust
There's other ends and outs you'll probably need, but that will depend mostly on the direction you want to go with your build...

Re: 250 to 350 swap questions

69heavyxhevy has a pretty extensive list. I got my shroud, clutch fan, and mount perches at a junkyard cheap. I didn't have to move my mounts at all which was kinda weird as some people say you have to and some
Mount the motor as is. Anyways it was pretty straightforward and fun. Got the flywheel machined but it looks like you have an auto so nvm. The wiring was pretty much the same but I want to say I had one extra wire that went to my 250's volt reg. good luck with the swap.

Re: 250 to 350 swap questions

Thanks guys, sounds easy enough. Since my garage is tore down, I made a deal with the guy I bought the truck from to swap the good 250 in for now. That way I can drive the truck while I build the new garage.

You can do some fun mods to an inline six and being unique is always cool too.

Does your 6 have the integrated head?

Re: 250 to 350 swap questions

Unfortunately it does have the integrated head. I bought it because the body was great and I wanted an inline 6 and it had AC and Power Steering which is rare and it runs great too. If it does crack, it will be an easier swap to a non-integrated head with the core stuff already there. I've been down this road before and it is very frustrating because the AC and Power steering brackets won't work between the two types! That's my other reason for not pulling it too.
