How many teeth please help

Hi I have just got a 350 engine for my truck . The engine code is 14093638 according to my search I have found out that it's a



OHV,RWD,PFI/TBI,roller lifters, center bolt valve covers high swirl intake ports
With a single rear seal

My question is I am removing the fly wheel and need a flex plate as I am fitting a TH350 auto box . I have counted the teeth on the fly wheel and there is 168 teeth but looking on the net I also found this



Now my starter bolts are inline so that contradicts the thread above . Do I order one with the same teeth as the fly wheel for an engine with a single rear

If it has 168 teethe you need one for the one piece rear seal with a 168 teeth.

Is your concern the correct starter to flywheel combo?

Check your starter mounting on the engine block, a lot of Gm blocks were drilled for both the straight and offset starter mounts.

The post from the forum you showed is generally correct. However there are straight mount starters that will fit either tooth count flywheel. Most of these I remember had 3 mounting bolt holes.

Got info on the year of the truck the engine came out of?

Thanks yes the starter thread is what had concerned me I will check for three bolt holes . If the flywheel is 168 I guess I will get a 168 flex plate for a single seal . I don't know what year vehicle the engine came from as it was installed into a 65 c10 in the states before it was imported into the UK

Well with the flywheel off and counting the teeth I now know I need a 168 tooth flex plate
All I can find out about the engine is its made from 1988 to 1994

I know my engine has a single rear seal so that narrows it down

I am fitting a th350 and when I look up flex plates they are asking if its internal or externally balanced my torque converter has the number 1362650 stamped on it .

Are they all interchangeable or is there a way of telling the difference many thanks in advance for any advice

Martin, the engine that you have (1 pc seal rear main), will have a weighted flex or flywheel, how ever the balancer on front is neutral balance. Its hard for the parts guys to "chase', what is not in the computer? The vortec is a truck engine.....look for the date code on the block, to narrow it down...(that way, the parts house computer can dig up the proper part). Hope that helps...longhorn

Thanks Longhorn I started stripping the engine last night ready for paint as it's now on the stand . These are the numbers I have found .

On the front behind the water pump on the flat machined part is V1024UZB

On the rear above the oil filter on a machined flat part is CME138359

On the back of the block is in cast is 14093638

If any body can tell the year and what it came from that would be great

Martin, I've recently been researching the internal/external balance question in preparation for buying a vortec crate motor and, while there's lots of discussion on the forums, most is confusing. to keep it simple I decided to go with GM's use of the terms when describing their crate motors. bottom line is that, for a 350 anyway, 1 piece rear seal engines are called externally balanced. 2 piece rear seal engines are referred to as internally balanced. it has to do with the small balancing flange on the flywheel/flexplate end of the crank. this flange is missing on the 1 piece seal motor. apparently GM considers the flange to be part of the "internal" balance even though it is "outside" the seal and pan when assembled. the 1 piece crank requires the balancing to be on the flywheel/flexplate. thus "external" balance

lots of starters come drilled with 4 bolt holes to fit either diameter wheel. btw, for future reference, you don't have to count all those teeth, the 168 tooth wheel will be 14 inches in diameter, the 153 tooth is 12 3/4" IIRC

also, from the mortec site (http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm): "14093638...350...87-95...2 or 4...Roller or flat tappet cam, one-piece rear seal"
I don't think that's a "vortec" try checking the cylinder head casting number

Martin, in addition to knowing the type (internal/external) and teeth/diameter talked about in the previous posts, since you already have the converter you'll need to know the diameter of the converter bolt circle. common would be 10.75, but it could be 11.5 or 10.5.
