Loose steering wheel?

I know I should already know the answer by common sense... But I need to still ask because I am quiet unknowledgable with Chevy.... My steering wheel and colum all original. Still 3 speed and 3 on the tree, BUT, someone took out the OG turn signal arm and installed those crapppy bulky after market turn signals which new doesn't even work -,-.... My question is, my steer wheel wiggles up and down, I'm assuming that it is obviously loose, but I noticed, when I hold it up, my gearrs don't grind when I put into first or reverse gear. I feel like the wheel is going to break when I'm doing a U-turn and I'm turning the wheel and it's just wiggling around -,-..... Does anyone know what the problem is or why it is loose? And if so, how do I got th horn button off and tighten it down, or is that even the answer? Just tighten te bolt down with a impact drill?

Re: Loose steering wheel?

If tightening the wheel doesn't work I'd assume its the column bearings.

Re: Loose steering wheel?

Funny story about a loose steering wheel...back when I was in high school I drove a 63 international truck..on the way to school one morning I went thru a hoop-t-do in the road when the truck went over it the next thing I knew I was sitting there holding nothing but the steering wheel..I immediately slammed it back on the steering shaft,, don't know how I managed to do that but I did..pulled over and popped off the horn button and the steering nut had backed all the way off and was just laying there.....close call..

I also suspect loose or non-existent bearings. They are famous for that and your shaft may be getting chewed up at the bottom bearing. It's not that big a job to remove and reassemble them with good parts. Check out the vendors LMC or Classic Ind catalogs.

you know what trust me those aftermarket turn signals things are a big pain in the A$$ lol i had one in my truck when i 1st got it all because they dident want to fix the real issue which was the TS Switch .. so heres the story my buddy Chevy Mike on here got me the real TS switch and we put it in it a customized stock column any way it worked great for like a few days . then it became loose and would move inside the column like a inch of play all the way around . well it turns out that we dident have the self cancel part installed on the wheel and that part holds in and pushes against the center bearing of the new TS switch once we opened it up and put that part in all the play was gone ... so my point in this story is that most likely the PO was lazy put on that junky TS box as a band aid and you orginal TS switch might have finely broke causing all the play .. i say got to Orangetruckshop.com and order a new TS switch get rid of the old box thing and i bet you will be much more happy by the way the price of it is $ 55.00
