Work on a '37 Buick
This isn't about truck but is still related to GM.
Me and my grandpa worked on his '37 Buick Special. It is a beautiful 4 door sedan. Huge in-line 8 - 248 cubic inches - 100 horsepower. The paint is still pretty good. The interior is trashed and smells of cat ( ) We got it to run and it runs well - really well when you consider it is 66 years old and has been sitting in a barn for 15 years. Can't wait to get it finished! Anyone else know much about these things? We are having problems finding some little trim pieces and finding where the optional oil filter was plumbed in. The starter solenoid keeps sticking even though we cleaned it and lubed it. Nothing a crowbar doesn't fix everytime we start it! To make this thread valid: how do I get the metal rod thing that holds the door open fixed? Can you even replace it or do I have to buy the whole hindge? Mine broke today.

cool, someone else with an old buick. don't much about your 37 although i think they are good looking cars but i have a 52 special four door i'm scraping the paint off of now. it has the straight 8 also. heres a few buick links i've rounded up that may be of some help.

I have heard that the front fender has to come loose to get to the bolts on that door "keeper" rod.
I don't know for sure though as I have not done it myself (yet). You might can make a wrench to reach the front bolts as I had a friend 20 years ago that did. |

Pick up a copy of Hemmings Auto News (or something like that - can't recall the name exactly). It is on newstands and is a basically a big catalogue of old car parts etc. If you follow the ads in there for a while you may come up with what you need. Check out the net as well because I think there is a club for people with old Buicks. I know a fellow who has one here and he and a friend drove down into the Eastern US to pick up a spare motor for the car. I also saw one at a car show here a couple of years back that looked pretty original. Very nice.

The keeper rod doesn't look easy. I don't think taking off the whole fender would help either. I think it will be much easier to do it while I replace the hinge pin and bushings.
