292 side cover Leak
Hello all does anyone have a good fix for stopping the side covers from leaking on a 292?

Re: 292 side cover Leak
Clean the block w/ degreaser and a high power spray so you can see if you still have a new leak. Remove lifter covers, scrape old gaskets off. Inspect for defects: bends, rips, flats, tears, etc. Get fresh gaskets -- neoprene not cork -- Fel-Pro or eqivalent. Put fresh gaskets on w/RTV on the tin side. When RTV is dry, replace on block and tighten [3+3] bolts. Do not overtighten. Check for leaks.

^^ that. Also ... lay the covers on a flat surface and look for deformities. Be sure the raised cross at the bolt holes is not pulled inward too far otherwise you will not get good even clamping pressure once installed.
Or ... you could spend $75 or so for a pair of cast aluminum covers. Much more rigid and less likely to leak than stamped sheet metal units. |

Re: 292 side cover Leak
What have you tried? It's a simple removal, clean, and re-gasket job. Check plates for straight and that's about it.

Re: 292 side cover Leak
You don't like RTV? There's a color RTV that's oil proof. Red, Blue or Black. Can't remember which one it is. Some people use RTV instead of a gasket, but I wouldn't use it alone.

Re: 292 side cover Leak
There's no need for RTV gasket, when using a cork askets a simple spray of high tack put on clean surfaces and you're done.

Re: 292 side cover Leak
RTV to fill gaps from a warped cover. Not necessary for two perfectly flat mating surfaces obviously.

Re: 292 side cover Leak
I use the copper also. It will do what other high tack will do and not vice versa. I do use RTV when called for, which is usually a damaged or rough surface or lack of gasket fix.

Re: 292 side cover Leak
Ok I am feeling like I am missing something simple..... Have replaced gaskets. Originally with cork and then a neoprene type.
Checked for flat flanges and the over extended bolt holes. Have used high tack, and permatex aircraft gasket sealer. Have even tried doubling the gaskets up. No I have not used RTV that was my last resort. Thanks guys for your suggestions I will check what I have been doing Aron and start again. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 292 side cover Leak
Do I remember an o-ring or some little gasket under the bolt heads too? I doubt you're leaking from the bolts though.
Inspect the block surfaces. If I remember right, they are cast. Look for some obvious peak or valley in the cast iron.

Re: 292 side cover Leak
I'm not sure what the original seal looked like, but I put these bonded washers under the bolt head.

Re: 292 side cover Leak
IIRC the OEM O-rings had right angle sides, rather than the circular profile of a normal O-ring. Just a flat rubber washer.
RichardJ's bonded steel washers would be a perfect upgrade.

Re: 292 side cover Leak
If you are using RTV make sure you give it time to set up. When I did my covers I attached the gaskets to the covers, let it set up, then put them on the truck, let them set up, tightened, then drove. Took over a day to let everything dry but I have no leaks. I failed to do this on my valve cover gasket and it leaked right away.
