Drop Springs The Correct Way
So a buddy and I at work today got in a heated argument about drop spring and the proper way to seat the springs. The argument was over do you seat the spring at the top of the coil or the bottom of the coil in the LCA. So I was curious as to how you all did it? So how did you seat your front drop coils.

Re: Drop Springs The Correct Way
The top has to seat on the "D" shape up in the spring pocket.
When you cut coils, you always cut from the bottom,...

Re: Drop Springs The Correct Way
The D appears to be offset, which will actually keep the coils themselves centered in the spring pocket if you align the D part. Don't worry about where the bottom ends up - just trim the bottom to the ride height you want and let it sit where it sits.

Re: Drop Springs The Correct Way
And that is what I told him to do. For some reason he thinks he need to cut the top of the coil and seat bottom. I told him no you do t do that. And he proceeded to tell me he is 65 yrs old and this is not the first c10 he has owned. I told him man I have put 3 different lowering kits on my truck in a year this truck and have installed 3 more on 3 other c10 I have owned and always seat them in at the top.

Re: Drop Springs The Correct Way
He's never layed on his back and looked up in the spring pocket.
Or has never had the truck entirely back together and one side sits higher because the top of the spring isn't seated correctly. I did that ONE time a long time ago. I never made that mistake again.

Re: Drop Springs The Correct Way
I agree w/what everyone is saying but I'll bet more than 1 guy has cut them from the top & installed them w/o issue (there's usually more than one way to be successful). It comes down to how lucky the installer is if doing it that way.

Re: Drop Springs The Correct Way
So when aligning the top "D" and it don't seat into the lower at the notch for the end of the coil do you trim the lower to fit? Encountering this very issue and was wondering whether or not to trim the last coil on the bottom to match the spring pocket. these are drop springs cant recall where from ECE most likely

I cut at the following rate: 1/2 coil = 1" of drop.

Re: Drop Springs The Correct Way
Having done over 12 trucks of my own and a few for friends in the last 24 months, seating the "D" at the top is the correct way. I let the bottom coil fall wherever it happens to end up as long as it's down in the recessed area in the bucket. I will also grind a 1" long "flat" on the bottom coil to copy the flat portion on the stock springs.

I just put em in. They'll eventually work out where they want to be. They aren't going anywhere so I'm not too worried about it
