Brake Booster R&R

Replacing the power brake booster on my '76. After working diligently to get the six nuts off of the brake booster bracket (not an easy task!) I thought it would just pull away from the firewall, but the rod seems to be stuck. Do I need to release the rod from the brake pedal or just pull a little harder on it? Thanks for any advice - Rob
