got a deer, used my truck

going down the hiway at about 50mph and a deer ran in front of me, hit it so hard it knocked me in the other lane where I almost hit a truck head on. was able to drive to the body shop about two miles away but that was it, front tire hits the fender with the slightest turn. gonna take a month to get it back. hood wont open so we cant see how bad it is under the hood but theyre guessing $5000. I hope my insurance gives me no problems. truly bummed as my grill was perfect, now i may have to settle for an aftermarket grill. hood moved the cowl and fender hit the door. killed the deer instantly

Wow... that's almost as much damage as I did to my truck when I hit a ditch at 45 mph. I bent my frame.

Glad you're okay.

That must have been a monster buck. That's some serious metal bending there. Save any meat?

It was, I sanded the entire truck to bare steel, used about a quart of filler on the whole truck.

Re: got a deer, used my truck

Glad it wasn't a worse accident and you're ok.
Keep the pressure on insurance to use OEM parts when you can. I did on my son's 71 Camaro that was in primer, but I did all the leg work for them. Paid me over $7k for repairs

It was a 160lbs doe, she looked right at me and I could see the "oh s---!" In her eyes! It went right under both drivers side tires, I think that side of my truck left the ground. I got a scratch on my arm but don't know how. It was a very hard hit! No meat, just mush!

Hate to see any older vehicle damaged.... especially a 67-72 GM.... especially one so clean. Glad you weren't hurt though. The outcome could have been much worse.

It's strange how calm I was, as I saw that truck headed right towards me I resigned myself to the end! Thought I was done, fortunately the other driver was paying attention and went off the road. The deer hit the front tire so hard it bent the arm on the steering box forcing me into the other lane. I was shaking pretty good after I pulled over.

Re: got a deer, used my truck

I know you want nice [as you had] OE parts but I hate to say owning a body shop I've seen this too many times they are gonna pay for aftermarket stuff. I remember a friend[ and a customer]of mine was state representative and had a new truck only a couple of days old and he drove to Little Rock for a session and bumped into one of those barrier things and bent his bumper. The truck had about 300 miles or so and the insurance would NOT pay to have a GM bumper put on. It was gonna be an aftermarket. This was in the day when that type truck didn't have paintwork on the bumper.[I think it was a 95 model] I tried to boost the labor enough to cover putting factory stuff back on but I ended up - about 50 bucks on the labor part to make up for putting on a GM part. They wouldn't budge an inch on that matter, I have not forgotten that. That was one thing that helped me move towards not doing outside work [as much if at all]

Oh my, that sucks. I'm really sorry to see this to your nice pickup, and glad you're alright. Good job keeping your cool and getting back in your lane.

What are the chances of scratching together some funds for a bruiser bumper? A buddy of mine and I built this some years ago on my '71.

I usually hit 3-4 deer a year and so far no big damage with the truck. My truck isn't as nice as yours but it has saved it from many bad hits including the last couple which 1 was at 75mph and the last was a poor doe at 45mph which i ran right up on top of and even slid sideways on her. Poor doe was just a chewed up meat wad when I went back to check on her. I always pack a pistol to put any down if the truck doesn't finish em.

Good luck getting it back together.

I don't even eat them! There was a deer crossing sign a mile down the road, apparently this deer was illiterate.
