3/4 ton Dana gears

So I have the standard 4.10 gears and the other thread got me thinking about gas mileage and rpms.

What other ratios can one put in to gain the most out of a 2wd truck?

Thanks

I assume you have a Dana 60. There are 78 different gearsets for that diff. 3.54 or 3.73 will greatly improve mileage.

I had 4.56 in my Dana 60, went to 3.54 and have been very happy with it. You will find most people will do 3.73 if they have some horsepower to play with..Your lucky having 4.10 you wont have to change the carrier to go to a higher ratio gear.

also make sure you have the "standard" 4.10's.. My truck had no build sheet and I assumed I had 4.10.. when I cracked it open and went to install my 3.54 turned out I had 4.56 and had to buy a new carrier.. held me up for almost 2 weeks..

Re: 3/4 ton Dana gears

Yea Scott they are the 4.10's I am turning roughly 3200 rpm at 65mph. Thinking with a 4l60e trans with the low 3 to 1 first gear will make up the difference lost with the 3.54 rear for highway.

Now for that Horsepower thing, Hmmm? That ought to be making it happen.

Unless you have one heck off a stump puller you are not going to want that high of a gear with an OD trans. Swap the tranny out then look at your RPMs. Its still early in my mind so my math may be off but it looks like the OD alone will drop you down to 2300 RPM at 65. Perfect for a mild cam or pulling a grade. That RPM should also keep you off of the stall convertor also.

Re: 3/4 ton Dana gears

I just installed a 700r4 with 4:10 gears. I'm wiring up the lockup switch but will report back how it works.
