J70 6x6 new detail photo's

Ok looks like this J70 will be mine about the end of September (this year 2015) and I snapped a few more photos, one a side view and a few of the axle tags....any idea who did the conversion ?

Blow up the FABCO tag picture and it says they are a division of Kelsey Hayes.

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

Also, I noticed it has a hydraulic ram on the front axle...two lines coming off of the bottom of the steering box, don't know how common hydraulic assisted power steering is.

Also found evidence that this truck is a former "Alyeska Pipeline company " truck.....And given it's age it is quite likely it was involved in building the trans Alaska oil pipeline...May actually have had reason for the all wheel drive.

That's a sweet rig. What are your plans for it?

I am not sure yet. I gave up my cdl last license renewal (up here it goes by birthday or something and I am on a 5 year rotation.....last time I got it renewed no problem....had to have a current medical on you while you were driving......this time have to present a medical to renew....) So anyway I have considered making it half flat bed half " camper. " so I could register is as an RV (the crane does not come with......it will be bare frame when I pick it up). Though it is pretty long and pretty heavy, I may register it commercial and do firewood with it.....either way...first thing is body and paint....at least to make the doors match again. Don't know if you have seen any of my other posts.......this is a 6v-53 Detroit with some road ranger behind it.......

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

It will be interesting to see what "t" case this has in it ....seems they made single, two and three speed units...I may have some very interesting gear ratios.....the glove box of tag calls out 34,000 # axles with. 5.(47?) Ratio....Though it also says I have a Clark 5 speed and 4 speed Spicer aux.....so unknown at this point.

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

Am I crazy for thinking this truck is weird for having two different styles of hub? Front is normal hub/drum, rear is dayton....
(Maybe the conversion wasn't done strait from the factory delivering it, so the customers paying for the conversion didn't have the chance to order with similar hubs as the new front axle?)

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

I mentioned the mismatch before and got several replies that is was "not uncommon" for trucks to have buds on the front and Daytona on the tandem....but never being a trucker and only recently paying any attention I can not say.

Also if it Was an Alyeska truck as I think.....it is unlikely it was "pre owned" at that time they were spending pretty freely and it was likely ordered as a fleet.

Good point about pre ownership. Other than its enormous weight, the thing could probably climb a mountain!

That's a shame you're not getting the hoist with it. I'd love to have a self-loader, but that much $$$ isn't in the cards right now.

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

I would not mind the flatbed and the outriggers but I have no use for a 40' squirt boom. I have toyed with the idea of a short wrecker boom out the back....kind of like the old scrammel explorer....also thinking about a "hook lift" for the last 8-10 feet of bed..

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

I'm doing some small lot logging - self loader would be the cat's azz for me. I just don't have the money for that much bed right now so I'm going with a 5yd dump that I can use to haul fill and shorter wood with.

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

You would rather have a grapple boom then, this is a cable crane.....And yeah I can understand, but I retired and that logging is a lot of work. I just want a place to sleep and a deck to haul my toys.....yeah I could get a trailer and a pickup.....but I would rather save this old truck.

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

How about a full length bed and just build the camper on the front portion? You have the option of just off-loading toys or the whole camp. Also could rig up other beds

Ideally, the rear bed will be large enough and either a hook lift or a roll back self loader for this

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

How much cab is needed to be classified a camper? Could you get a sleeper to mate up with the day cab, then put the flatbed behind that? Maybe a nice beavertail on hydraulics?

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

i have certainly considered that, there ( in this state) is no "size" restraints.. it has to have 5 of 7 features ( or something like that ) toilet sleeping lights heat cooking..... blah blah .... a bucket toilet under a bunk and light and a camp stove ( in a designated well) all count... it can be very minimal.

Make it a pop out chitter off the under carriage. Nothing says it has to be inside does it?

With a heat exchanger and a storage tank, you could have a hot water mud hole shower too.

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

I like the clean bucket under a bunk ( nothing saying I will ever USE it ) it is not hard to do some LED lighting, and being Alaska... propane heat is a nice Idea a small basin and heat exchanger hot water.. and a propane stove are small and easy to fit in.. and can be made to fold up flat against the wall... I am kind of excited about designing that part... almost like a sailboat only less oddly shaped. I like a hydraulic beavertail.... though a hook lift quick change bed idea has my interest as well. Even a rolloff would be ok best if I could drive the track rig onto the bed flat on the ground and load it after it was tied down as a unit.

Something like this is what I think would be really slick.

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

One of my machinery riggers has a beavertail that hinges above the rear axle and he can drive his 5Klb forklift up on it, then raise it up level without impacting the transport deck portion of the bed. I don't have any pics of it, but it works really slick and would likely be a good solution for your rig.

that actually sounds great....I just hate to have a load sitting on hydraulics...might have to think about a linkage or a lock ....

Re: J70 6x6 new detail photo's

His doesn't sit on the lift cylinders either. He's got a folding lock arm like what a ladder has to keep the two sides separated in the open position that's attached down around the axle line and holds the tail up. He also backs the fork truck on it so the weight is either over or between his wheels, not hanging off the back.

Hopefully that description makes sense.

I poked around online and didn't find anything on his business. He mainly works auctions and people who have his number from them and previous work. No website, no advertising of any kind. Just one dude with a truck and a fork truck.
