Picked up a '78
Hi all,
I'm a new member of this forum! I had an old '80 Chevy 3/4 ton growing up and now it's come full circle. Just picked up a '78 3/4 4x4. It was a good price, but found out that the engine needs a rebuild. Good thing I have mechanic buddies who are willing to do a good job on it. Using this for mostly a hunting truck, but may look into getting lockers and a lift kit down the road! |

Welcome. She's sweet lookin. Is it in pretty good shape? Is it rusty or clean?

Re: Picked up a '78
She has some spot rust from being up north in Flagstaff, AZ, but the body is solid, tires are new, and has flowmaster exhaust. Well worth the money I paid just with those items alone. I might look into going back to stock manifolds/carb since I'm only looking to tow a trailer and go hunting. No sense in keeping performance parts, IMHO.

Re: Picked up a '78
Nice. I love the 78s. Pre-ECM. Electric oil guage, Right in the sweet spot.
Move the vac advance from the passenger side (ported vac) where it is now to the driver side (manifold vac) on the Edelbrock carb. Then lean out the idle and increase base timing to 12-16 *BTDC. Better mileage, better performance, reduced engine temps at idle, smoother idle. Ported vac is emissions nonsense. The headers are OK. Those are Hooker 2453s; I can tell just looking at them. They're solid, and hold up pretty well.
