Spline count
I am changing out the stock 3 speed in my '57 in favour of an A833 4 speed. Can anyone tell me what the spline count is on the '57 3 speed input shaft so I know if I can just replace the trans without replacing the clutch disc. Thanks

Re: Spline count
You need to change the disc to a Chrysler disc that matches its splines. I think the GM is only 10 spline and you need 26 spline
You should be able to use the pressure plate and through out bearing that you have |

Re: Spline count
Thanks dwcsr. The 833 that i have is a GM one with a 10 spline input so I suspect that the spline should be the same as any other 10 spline GM. The 833's that Chrysler used had a different bolt pattern and wont bolt up to a GM bell housing.

Re: Spline count
Those transmissions were used behind V6 and 305 powered trucks in 85 or 86 IIRC. They were not real common in truck country and we had trouble getting parts for them through GM when I worked at the dealership in '94. I don't believe they were all that tough, either.
Have you checked it against your bell yet? I remember something funny about it in terms of using it as a bolt in swap for a non-OD trans. It may have had one ear at the top that had a slightly offset bolt hole compared to a regular GM bolt pattern or maybe the bearing retainer was a larger diameter than the other GM 4 speeds of the time? Yes to10 spline input. IIRC the output yoke is small fine spline like THM 350/700R4. Last edited by 1project2many; 09-11-2015 at 07:44 AM. |
