Question about a brake light switch
Hey everybody,
Since my 62's turn signals and taillights work but my brake lights don't, I thought I'd replace my brake light switch. It's the old two prong variety, but here's my question. Neither prong on the old one or new one seems to have a marking, so can you just attach either wire to either prong, or is it trial and error to get it right? I put it in this afternoon and still don't have lights, so I was thinking I might need to swap the wires, but I thought I'd check here. |

Re: Question about a brake light switch
No, it doesn't matter which wire goes to which terminal on the switch.
The switch contacts simply make a connection between the two wires when the pedal is depressed, allowing power to flow to the turn signal switch which then routes it to the brake lights. Note that it is possible for a defective turn signal switch to still operate the turn signals correctly but prevent the brake lights from working. That's because there are contacts inside the turn signal switch that over-ride the brake light on one side or the other when the turn signal is in use. |
