1952 AD with LS1 header dilemma

Newbie here with first post, I have been on this amazing site since February, quietly gather information and reading/gazing at your builds. There are some true craftsmen on here. Anyways, on to my question.

I have a 1952 AD 3100 truck, boxed original frame, with mustang II front end. I bought a 2001 5.7L LS1 out of a Trans AM with its matching 4L60E transmission. Everything is stock on the engine and transmission.

What headers or manifolds will fit without messing with the firewall/frame? Sanderson, or Hooker block huggers headers, or Corvette manifolds, or just leave the Trans Am manifolds on.

What's the difference between Hooker and Sanderson Headers?

I'm not at all familiar with the '52 3100 frame, and clearance issues but I bought these Hooker LSx cast iron headers for my '98 Camaro LS1/4L60e into my '67 Chevy C-10 and they work with no issues.

Might be worth doing a little research on them for your application....

Oh, and welcome to the board!

Early c5 98-01 for sure work perfect with stock frame.

Re: 1952 AD with LS1 header dilemma

I have a stock frame with MII suspension on my 1950 3100. I don't know about the trans am exhaust manifold you have but I used 2002 corvette exhaust manifolds and they worked. I only had to clearance my boxing plates. The very corner of the flange rubbed the boxing plate so a small hole fixed that without hurting strength. I say mock up your engine centered and try the ones you have and if they don't work then try another set.

If you are in the twin cities I'll even let you test fit my vette manifolds and a set of ls2 GTO manifold I have laying around.

Re: 1952 AD with LS1 header dilemma

Hello 52mnresto. I just went through the same process with my 52 GMC Burb. I found a pair of 98-99 Camaro/Firebird manifolds that are as close to perfect as you can get. From what I can find out, 98-99 were only years these were made then they went to cast iron in 2000. Driver side is the same but the pass side is a little different, but may work. I don't know cause I couldn't find them locally. I can pm you some pics if interested.

Re: 1952 AD with LS1 header dilemma

Sid, I have several pictures but I don't have a pic posting account and don't know if I would know what to do with one if I had it! I could email them to someone and they could post if that would work. I haven't checked if there are some instructions as to posting pictures here. Is it OK to post my email addy here?

Re: 1952 AD with LS1 header dilemma

I bought these manifolds and was told they were Corvette, but no one on here came up with what year!
They are stamped two piece that we had coated and ground smooth, do they look like these

These are the 98-99 Camaro exhausts. Driver side had a little funky turnout that was remedied.

Re: 1952 AD with LS1 header dilemma

Look very similar don't they solidaxel. Yours look to have a dimple on the middle two cylinders on the passenger side where azcornman's don't. Looks to be EGR ports too where's your don't. My 5.3 doesn't have EGR. I have 2010 Camaro manifolds with no EGR but the two bolt flange is about 1/2" too wide on both sides. Was suggested to mill the flange to a different angle to pull the flanges closer to the block. Gotta figure out how to clamp the manifolds good and solid in the mill.

Re: 1952 AD with LS1 header dilemma

I went with the Sanderson's and really like how they worked out. We did have to do some minor clearancing on the passenger side. They fit without it but just to be safe. Check post #29.

Sid, when we first started on the manifolds there was a cover and a EGR on them, but welded and sanded them smooth for the heat coating we had placed on them
So maybe they are Camaro!
