1977 K10 Filling Trouble in California
Hello all, I live in California, and thanks to the environmentally friendly gas pump nozzles, I am unable to pump gas very easily into my 1977 K10. The nozzles are too short to stay inside the fill tube. There is a poor seal and gas leaks out too. I have tried the McCuff, an aid to help filling RVs, but not much luck. I tried a plastic spout from a gas can and no luck with that either.
Any ideas besides moving out of state? |

Do just like people have been doing for years.
Crank that nozzle handle around so the hose is at about 2 oclock and fill it up. |

I assume he is talking about those pumps with the rubber sleeve thingy around it. I used to see them in NH but they finally got rid of that junk. If I had to deal with those I would carry a big funnel in my truck.

Must be the nozzles in the Inland Empire area. Yes, I have tried turning the nozzle every direction, but no luck. Gas ends up leaking from the inside of the bed. I replaced the gasket between the fill tube and bed also.

Just carry a good sharp knife and cut the rubber thing off. Problem solved!

Re: 1977 K10 Filling Trouble in California
I have a 77 c10, and have the same problem. What I have been doing is taking four paper towels, fold them into a 2"x4" rectangle, and use it as a gasket at the bottom of that stupid rubber boot. I cover about 1/3 of the opening at the bottom and cram the nozzle in till it hooks in. It usually keeps the fuel in and off the paint about 90% of the time. Took a few tries till I had it down. But I do have the leaded fuel fillers that are bigger. Still, it should work.

The thing to check is your tanks vent tube if its clogged that can make pumping gas a nightmare.

I am north of San Fran. I have no problems with my 77. I do run the nozzle on the slowest automatic setting when fueling. I have been filling my thirsty Rat for 1 1/2 years.

My 76 has the older flush cap with no door - not sure when they changed it but by 1980 for sure.

Re: 1977 K10 Filling Trouble in California
This is your problem. I had a 75 step that I did have some issues with sometimes but my 84 step had no problems. Neither did my 83 fleetside. THe early trucks had the fuel filler too low. Put it on the slow setting as suggested and consider swaping to a later style filler neck
