New member- ID Question

Hello everyone. Let me introduce myself. Been looking at this site and finally joined. So much information in one location.... It's great. I've called myself 66 GWN (Great White North). Obviously from North of the border. I purchased a 66 fleetside a couple of years back I found on a local classified add. I've always wanted one since my grandfather taught me to drive his 33 years ago. Thought it would be a great project for me and my sons to spend some time together rebuilding it and learning as we go. Well, the first two years we may have spent a week total on it. The kids were not interested at all. Times change and now all they want to do is work on the truck. Fun times.

Getting parts in Canada is very difficult and expensive we have found, so we are quickly becoming body work "experts".not sure what it is like south of the border but finding donor parts at a scrap yard is next to impossible. We have found one place near Toronto called bills truck shop which we have made a trip to a couple of times. Very helpful. Boy you could spend a lot of coin there..... Like a candy store ...

Now for the Question:
How do I verify my engine, tranny and rear end?. PO told me it was not original. Said it was a 305 but didn't know what the tranny or rear end were..

Welcome to the gang, Youll like it here! Pictures are the way to get answers,It is true picture worth a 1,000 words!

Welcome to the forum! To find out what motor you have, you'll have to look on the driver's side of the motor to the rear and below the valve cover. There's a flat spot with numbers stamped on the block. Also, on the passenger side forward in front of the head is another set of stamped numbers that'll tell you the year manufactured. As for the tranny, is it a standard or automatic? How many bolts are on the rear diff cover?

Here are the pics and information. ID help please. First 2 pics are driver side rear block. "14010203" and what believe says"GM 5.0 L". The third pic is on the rear end (I know dirty). I count 8 bolts?. Also it is an automatic.

Any help would be appreciated..

Im sure someone will chime in about rearend and tranny ,pictures of truck inside and out help alot,could be 3 or 4 different trannys

Welcome GWN .The transmission can be identified by the shape of the pan. Just Goggle "chevy automatic transmission identification"

With the 5.0L on the block it is a 305. The rear end is a GM truck 12 bolt. As for the trans, you will need to ID it by the shape of the pan as 65sub said.

Looks like you've got some floor pan work in front of you, but other than that it looks pretty solid. Welcome.

I didn't realize that you have an original automatic column. That column is for a Powerglide. Does the trans shift only once? if so it is a Powerglide.
