vin number question

I've try ed every decoder for the Vin on my 72 c10. The 1 I found that's even close says my vin should start with a CE. Mine had CCE. No tag on the door frame only the glove box tag. Any help?

The first letter indicates the make: C for Chevrolet or T for GMC. The 2nd letter is the chassis type: C = two wheel drive, K = four wheel drive.

72 was the first year for this style VIN.

Re: vin number question

So what would KCE start of a vin mean on a 1971 truck?

Re: vin number question

Never mind. I think I found it. A K prefix in 1971 denotes the z55 option which is a Pennsylvania only capacity tag. I think…

Re: vin number question

Nothing in a factory VIN denotes a vehicle option.
K as the first letter of a VIN in pre-71 trucks or K as the 2nd letter of the VIN in 72 and newer trucks indicates 4WD.

Re: vin number question

So what would KCE3 as the start of a vin signify? It’s a 1971 cab and chassis, dual rear wheel, 2wd, 133 inch wheelbase. I can’t find K and C next to each other to start a vin in any of the decoders I found.

Re: vin number question

KCE331B647594, Model CE31003
Ahh, that is what is known as a "K" VIN. When ordered with special options, they put a "K" in the VIN signifying it.

I have only seen "K" VIN's for 1967 (both Chev and GMC) years, and not later years 1968-1971, although GM has references to it here and there, and I was wondering if they really did still put K's in the VIN's up through 1971, and that proves it.

From the 1971 Dealer Data Book C30 Model:
Z55 Plates: Serial Number (State of Pennsylvania) Chassis-Cab or Cowl models only
"K" Plate: Available only when 1850-lb each front springs, dual rear wheel conversions and 3100-lb each or 4150-lb each rear springs are ordered.

He's got the Z55 "K" VIN requirements fullfilled: Cab-Chassis, F60, G60, and R05.
