Sound deadening Fat Mat with jute

I am doing a full frame off resto on my 69 and now I am looking at what to do for the floor in the cab. I want to install Fat Mat over the floor, back wall where the gas tank was and the fire wall. Here is my question, do I still install the firewall 3 mats on top of the fat mat? I tried a search and after reading thru a bunch of pages, I could not find the answer to this question.

Thanks for comments.

Re: Sound deadening Fat Mat with jute

I would, if nothing else to cover up all (or as much as possible) of the shiny aluminum.

FWIW: When I restored my '52, I installed GTMAT onyx butyl (same spec as Dynamat but significantly less expensive) on the toe panel, fire wall, cowl, roof, door skins, and back cab wall (behind tank). I did not install on the floor as that year truck only uses a rubber floor mat and I did not want the aluminum sound deadening to show or get "ugly". So, I used 3M Body Schutz on the underside of the cab floor. Body Schutz is an undercoating and affective sound deadener all in one. It worked great! I did install the factory firewall pad as well. Where the GTMAT wanted to show through at the edges of the firewall pad, I covered it with anti friction tape so only black showed through (i.e. visually insignificant).

Check out GTMAT!

Re: Sound deadening Fat Mat with jute

88stranger I would do the same as Davidf suggested I have been doing upholstery work for 25yrs. I have been using the fatmat products for 5yrs now and love the stuff and very reasonable, you can do your truck easily with one roll 50sq for $100. I do the floor and the back of the cab inside and inside the doors what a different,s it makes. They make it with or without their logo, you can ruff it up with some scotch brite and paint it as well. Hope this helps.

Re: Sound deadening Fat Mat with jute

I used it all. I put Dynamite down, then closed cell aluminized insulation, followed by MLV (Mass Load Vinyl) the the jute, then the carpet. You can see this on my build thread.

Well, as quite as I think I can get it. At least now conversations are easier to have at highway speeds and the radio sounds better.

I used everything but the MLV, which is what my question is to you sir?

Do you think it made that big of a difference in the sound?

I may take mine back a part and add it but just didn't figure it could make that much difference in the over all sound quality of the cab.

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Andy, it's hard for me to say, because I did it all at once. But the different materials have different characteristics. The Dynamat/Fatmat material as you know reduces vibration which causes harmonics. The closed cell aluminized foam reflects heat/cold and helps combat noise. MLV Mass Load Vinyl reduces let's call it airborne noise. If you do a google search you'll see that it is used a great deal in home theatre rooms underneath sheet rock. It's very dense/heavy and pretty pricy because of the freight charges. It's also not really easy to work with. It doesn't like to hold a shape and the only adhesive that I found that works is Loctite spray adhesive Professional Performance. http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/14/...erformance.htm
Here are some reading resources:

https://acousticalsolutions.com/mass...the-right-way/

http://www.backtoplastic.com/?page_id=61

If you take a look at my build thread you'll see what I did.

Hope this helps.

I did the same. 80 mil fat mat and carpet which had MLV and jute preinstalled. Hard to say how much one did over the other since I started with bare metal floor. It definitely keeps out plenty of heat. Before I couldn't put my hand on the floor because of all the extra heat. Now it's not a problem.

Did you also use Fat Mat or something similar for heat and sound protection?? Are you satisfied with the results?? I ask because I am doing a project with my grandson and we've already cleaned out the cab and are ready to put in insulation and the seat carriage. Is 100 sq. feet (Mass Load Vinyl) sufficient for the cab of a '70 Chevy C-10??

100 ft should be plenty! My truck is pretty dog gone quite for it to be as old as it is. I also put the road kill inside the door per my local stereo shop guy. I did a 12"x12" in the middle of the door and then 6"x6" in each corner as close as I could get it.
When I shut the doors now they are solid!

Re: Sound deadening Fat Mat with jute

Wow! Those pictures are great and you did a nice job on that carpet. So much better then the typical lose fitting kits look.
I noticed you also wrapped ur gas tank. How's that working for you? Does it help quite things down or why exactly did u wrap the tank?
I just bought Fat Rattle which is just the .80Mil not the .50Mil which is Fat Mat I'm pretty sure. That said, I've been spending the extra on Dynamat for the last 3 projects and after reading all the feedback and reviews wish I didn't wait so long.....

I installed fatmat rattle trap where ever I could and 75 sq ft is more than enough. The kit I ordered came in 2 rolls and I still had some leftover. As for the carpet I ordered it with the jute and the mass vynal backing for heat and sound protection.I am very happy with the results and as for the sound of my radio it sounds 100% BETTER. I can knock on the side of the bed and the fender and sounds hollow, but when I knock on the door it is solid.

I've seen this steering wheel on 1990 chevy trucks and it's a little over 15 inches in diameter.
