Straight barn find

Hi all
I have come across a great straight barn find 47-50 (3100) on an old grain truck chassis. The fenders are completely straight and the floor is even intact.

I want to build a Lowrider static drop.
My question is what frame should I put it on. I know the newer Chevys have a significantly wider track width.
Any recommendations?

I have already sourced a matching short box step side.
I haven't purchased either yet, as I kinda want to come up with a plan for a chassis first.

Any help or advice would be awesome.

I'm having trouble attaching photos but I will try agai after this post.
Thanks all

Seems a lot of guys lean towards the square bodies. I'm using a '95. Main thing is single cab lwb.

Lot of good info from several member builds in the build threads. Sub-Forums: Projects and Builds

Re: Straight barn find

s10 frames are the same 82-03. there are small differences in the brake lines and axle ratios (I have a 1991 with a 3.08 WOOF) through the years but generally any s10 frame can be made to fit.

a longbed s10 is close to exactly the right wheelbase for a 47-55 truck, a standard cab shortbed frame needs lengthened and an extended cab frame needs shortened.

I used a 47 gmc grain truck on a longbed frame, and have a 49 chevy 3600 flatbed on a longbed frame. link is in my signature.

one thing I will say is that building mounts to use an s10 frame is pretty easy, but most people get overwhelmed at the point of hooking up all the systems. make a PLAN, on how you want to finish the truck. skymangs did a great job getting into the details on completing the swap, read that thread through and through.

Re: Straight barn find

Are you sure it is a 3100 front clip? Cab is the same, but bigger truck had larger and wider fenders, grille and hood.

Actually I'm not certain. The numbers on the side of the hood are gone
Op art of one is trill there. Says loadmaster or something something like that

Re: Straight barn find

That is the big truck front clip, wheel opening and width are clues. With an s10 conversion the tires and wheel will be set deep in the opening and will look small compared to the wheel opening. Good news is usually the cabs are in pretty good shape because the farmers stored them indoors and took care of them. Frame is super heavy, you can use the link in my signature that will get you to a page that has the original technical manuals that shows the frame specs and sizes. Use the find year feature for your truck.

thanks for the advice.
Would it be a closer fit to put it on a 78-831500 chassis?
That would be pretty easy.
Or is the width of the body still too narrow for that?

What about a dodge Dakota V8. They are wider than a s-10, but narrower than a full size Chevy.

Any advice would be helpful.....
Thanks fellas

Re: Straight barn find

I have a 52 2 ton. Im putting on a 96 k2500 4x4. The problem is the wheel openings are big for the big tires. It may look silly unless you run a large diameter tire. Im going to be running a 35 inch tall tire with no lift other than how i mount the body.

Re: Straight barn find

Friend put a big truck cab and clip on a mid 90's 4wd dually shortened to work with a 8' flat bed. he also used alcoa wheel adaptors.

Re: Straight barn find

I think he said he wanted to lower it.

check out lower50's build in the project forum
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=648459

its a big truck cab on an s10 frame and is coming along really nice.

alternatively, I think you can put the smaller truck fenders hood and grille on the big truck cab, if the cab is really nice.

Re: Straight barn find

Or run 10" wide front wheels! Offset them out to clear the frame. Just a thought. If you want it low, it could tuck huge front wheels.

How much wider is the outside width than a 3100, does anybody know?

As much as I would love to build one like that. It's way over my head.

I think I am going to pass on the old girl. I think it's not quite the project I'm looking for. If it were a 3100 I would be all over it.
He only is asking $800 if anyone is super serious,I could put you in contact. It's in Brandon Manitoba.

I have to focus on my other truck anyways it's almost done

Very nice truck! I love 'em all so glad you shared.

I built the truck in my icon picture using a big truck cab because it was solid. $800 is a good price if it is in good condition.

supercharger with single circuit and guessing drum brakes. i like the cut of your jib. usually you have to join a club to see that kind of optimism.

Re: Straight barn find

Cabs are the same and $800 is a steal if you are in the northern, midwest or eastern rust belts.

Haha ya. It's a real handful. In a straight line it's fun but takes all I got in my legs to get er stopped.
The plan this winter is to put power disks on. Just to make it a bit safer.

Re: Straight barn find

add a hydroboost to keep that firewall clean and uncluttered. Plus you will have about 500 more PSI than with a vacuum booster.
Not as simple to install, but you might find the lines and useable hydroboost from an 80's full size Chevy or olds diesel.
At pickapart here, they charged me $40 for everything. I sorta thought he thought it was some kind of truck hydraulic pump, and almost gave it away.
BTW, my link doesn't work, and I can't seem to delete it.
